[edit] World Manufacturer Identifier
The first three characters uniquely identify the manufacturer of the vehicle using the World Manufacturer Identifier or WMI code. A manufacturer that builds fewer than 500 vehicles per year uses a 9 as the third digit and the 12th, 13th and 14th position of the VIN for a second part of the identification. Some manufacturers use the third character as a code for a vehicle category (e.g., bus or truck), a division within a manufacturer, or both. For example, within 1G (assigned to General Motors in the United States), 1G1 represents Chevrolet passenger cars; 1G2, Pontiac passenger cars; and 1GC, Chevrolet trucks.
[edit] WMI Regions
The first character of the WMI is the region in which the manufacturer is located. In practice, each is assigned to a country of manufacture. Common auto-manufacturing countries are noted.

[edit] Vehicle Descriptor Section
The 4th through 9th positions in the VIN are the Vehicle Descriptor Section or VDS. This is used, according to local regulations, to identify the vehicle type and may include information on the platform used, the model, and the body style. Each manufacturer has a unique system for using this field.
[edit] North American Check Digits
One element that is fairly consistent is the use of position 9 as a check digit, compulsory for vehicles in North America and used fairly consistently even outside this rule.
[edit] Vehicle Identifier Section
The 10th through 17th positions are used as the Vehicle Identifier Section or VIS. This is used by the manufacturer to identify the individual vehicle in question. This may include information on options installed or engine and transmission choices, but often is a simple sequential number. In fact, in North America, the last five digits must be numeric.
[edit] North American Model Year
One consistent element of the VIS is character number 10, which is required (in North America) to encode the model year of the vehicle.
[edit] North American Plant Code
Another consistently-used element (which is compulsory in North America) is the use of the 11th character to encode the factory of manufacture of the vehicle. Although each manufacturer has their own set of plant codes, their location in the VIN is standardized.
[edit] Model year encoding
Besides the three letters that are not allowed in the VIN itself (I, O and Q), the letters U and Z and the digit 0 are not used for the year code. Note that the year code can be the calendar year in which a vehicle is built, or a model or type year allocated by the manufacturer. The year 1980 was encoded by some manufacturers, especially General Motors and Chrysler, as "A" (since the 17-digit VIN wasn't mandatory until 1981, and the "A" or zero was in the manufacturer's pre-1981 placement in the VIN), yet Ford and AMC still used a zero for 1980. Subsequent years increment through the allowed letters, so that "Y" represents the year 2000. 2001 through 2009 are encoded as the digits 1 through 9, and subsequent years are encoded as "A", "B", "C", etc.
Code | Year | Code | Year | Code | Year | Code | Year |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
A | 1980 | L | 1990 | Y | 2000 | A | 2010 |
B | 1981 | M | 1991 | 1 | 2001 | B | 2011 |
C | 1982 | N | 1992 | 2 | 2002 | C | 2012 |
D | 1983 | P | 1993 | 3 | 2003 | D | 2013 |
E | 1984 | R | 1994 | 4 | 2004 | E | 2014 |
F | 1985 | S | 1995 | 5 | 2005 | F | 2015 |
G | 1986 | T | 1996 | 6 | 2006 | G | 2016 |
H | 1987 | V | 1997 | 7 | 2007 | H | 2017 |
J | 1988 | W | 1998 | 8 | 2008 | J | 2018 |
K | 1989 | X | 1999 | 9 | 2009 | K | 2019 |
[edit] Check Digit Calculation
Firstly, find the numerical value associated with each letter in the VIN. (I, O and Q are not allowed.) Numerical digits use their own values.
A: 1 | J: 1 | |
B: 2 | K: 2 | S: 2 |
C: 3 | L: 3 | T: 3 |
D: 4 | M: 4 | U: 4 |
E: 5 | N: 5 | V: 5 |
F: 6 | W: 6 | |
G: 7 | P: 7 | X: 7 |
H: 8 | Y: 8 | |
R: 9 | Z: 9 |
Secondly, look up the weight factor for each position in the VIN except the 9th (the position of the check digit).
1st: ×8 | 5th: ×4 | 10th: ×9 | 14th: ×5 |
2nd: ×7 | 6th: ×3 | 11th: ×8 | 15th: ×4 |
3rd: ×6 | 7th: ×2 | 12th: ×7 | 16th: ×3 |
4th: ×5 | 8th: ×10 | 13th: ×6 | 17th: ×2 |
Thirdly, multiply the numbers and the numerical values of the letters by their assigned weight factor, and sum the resulting products. Divide the sum of the products by 11. The remainder is the check digit. If the remainder is 10, the check digit is the letter X. Valid check digits also run through the numbers zero to 9.
[edit] Worked example
Consider the hypothetical VIN 1M8GDM9A_KP042788, where the underscore will be the check digit.
VIN: 1 M 8 G D M 9 A _ K P 0 4 2 7 8 8 Value: 1 4 8 7 4 4 9 1 0 2 7 0 4 2 7 8 8 Weight: 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 10 0 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 Products: 8 28 48 35 16 12 18 10 0 18 56 0 24 10 28 24 16
The sum of all 16 products is 351. Dividing by 11 gives a remainder of 10, so the check digit is "X" and the complete VIN is 1M8GDM9AXKP042788.= Possible conflict of interest ==

[edit] Carfax article
Greetings. I noticed you took exception to my edits on the Carfax article. As an aside, I didn't think your comment on the talk page was fair. I had hoped editors would assume good faith. I genuinely tried to create a more professional article than had been the case, and I had hoped criticisms would be discussed on the talk page instead of making the change on the article.
To get to the crux of the matter, I intentionally left off the lawsuit issue for several reasons. First, in a story about the basics of the company -- and I understand we may disagree -- I do not believe the lawsuit rises to the level of inclusion material. Second, lawsuits about companies come and go; I reviewed other corporate articles in wikipedia and seldom found references to lawsuits, and found none where the case was settled for so little. Even the plaintiffs objected to the settlement:
I noticed you have written about VINS and motorcycles, among other edits. And I noted in two articles you created, both businesses, you neglected to mention lawsuits there:
In the case of S&S, they were sued by a pretty big player for a pretty important reason. Also, Ironhorse had a fairly notable recall that didn't make it to the wikipedia article.
My point is this -- you should not have included those issues in the articles, any more than a lawsuit settled by Carfax should be included. Additionally, I do object to referencing the lawsuit the way you did -- I do not feel the reference uses an even-handed approach. If we are going to include the reference, then I would argue we need to include how it turned out. Finally, I disagree that a lawsuit in this circumstance merits a subheading, and will ask that if the material is included that it be done in a way that fits in and flows with the article. If attention-grabbing headlines is the goal, then we could put a subhead about how Carfax got cited two straight cycles as a great place to work. But I don't think that's an "even-handed" subhead either.
Before reverting and attempting further changes, I would like to see whether it's possible we can reach some consensus that you and other editors think is fair.
So, I have several questions. You seem to have a lot of experience in this field. I have shared my "bias" and hope you will do same. Were you a party to the lawsuit? Are you a former customer? Are or were you affiliated in some manner with a competitor website? Are or were you ever affiliated with S&S Cycle or American Ironhorse? Of course, you don't have to answer any of these, but in the spirit of consensus, fairness and open discussion I hope you will do so.
Second, if you still believe the lawsuit should remain, for how long do you believe it should remain? Is the lawsuit still relevant 10 years from now? Just wondering what your opinion is.
Finally, if you believe the lawsuit material should stand, would you be willing to provide edits to the articles on S&S Cycle and Ironhorse to reference in a similar manner their lawsuits? If not, why are those different?
You may respond here or on my talk page. Thank you. Vehiclehist (talk) 13:57, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
- I read your response. I have asked you to state that you have no conflict of interest with the articles you created, but you didn't respond. Can you state that you have no relationship with the owners of either of those businesses? I think it would clear up this matter. Second, can you state that you were not a party to the lawsuit re Carfax and you do not have any other biases that would be relevant? It seems as if you have an ax to grind, and I think it's important you clarify this. Finally, I have asked your opinion as to how long you think the lawsuit content should stand on an article when the company was never found guilty of anything. Again, please answer the question. In another edit you had made, I believe you criticized someone for not answering questions, and I was disappointed your response didn't do that. Thank you in advance for answering these questions. Vehiclehist (talk) 21:30, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, I don't log into Wikipedia to take orders from other editors or disclose personal details. My opinion means very little here, as this is an encyclopedia.
- WP:5 explains "Wikipedia is not the place to insert personal opinions, arguments or experiences."
- I have an axe to grind? Thanks for assuming good faith. I do not edit anonymously, and you have made it clear that you are willing to read through every edit I have made in the past. You're trying pretty hard to expose some sinister motive in my edits, and in that search I wish you luck. While you're snooping, look at the improvements I made to the Carfax article before you ever came along.
- After comments like these, why would I help you in your dig for dirt? How will that help me avoid wasting more time discussing this matter with you? I don't have a conflict of interest with Carfax, or I would have refrained from editing the article. This situation exists because you do and you did.
- WP:NPOV clearly states "Let the facts speak for themselves"
- If you want to debate my edits, let us have those debates on articles where other editors can help. I don't have to participate in a debate about my life and every edit I have made just because I stopped you from a company clean up and you don't like it. You have demonstrated that you are only looking to discredit me, and I am done responding to such trash. Corey Salzano (talk) 22:25, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

In order to be included in the article, an image of Obama's house must first be published in a reliable secondary source. This is a privacy concern. Please see WP:BLP for details. Ronnotel (talk) 17:08, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
- I did not add the image to the article, user Letowskie did. I restored an image that he removed from the article and replaced with his user created house image. Please see the image's discussion page[4] where I have raised concerns with this image even being used in Wikipedia at all because it is lacking photo credits. [edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:Rezko.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:Rezko.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
