[edit] Wikipedia:Northern Irish Wikipedians' notice board

Hi Larry, just to let you know about the notice board in case you haven't seen it yet. I was looking at your photos on Flickr, have you uploaded any to Wikipedia yet? Some of them would be great for articles like The Crown Liquor Saloon, Samson and Goliath (Cranes), Belfast City Hall, Belfast Botanic Gardens and Charles Lanyon. The mural ones too. Stu ’Bout ye! 09:22, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Great, thanks for letting me know. I've uploaded a few photos of Croatia, but I might add some NI ones soon too. Cordless Larry 14:51, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Request

Hi! Your photos of Croatia on Flickr are really cool. Would you allow their use on the Croatian Wikipedia? I think we could use almost all of them. --Zmaj 12:39, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Sure, but I have 124 on Flickr at the moment, so if you let me know if there are any in particular you want to use, I could start by uploading them. Cordless Larry 13:16, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

City photos and buildings are the main priority, I'd say. Osijek and Vukovar have no photos at all in the hr wiki - actually, Vukovar has some old postcards :) I'll take those you already uploaded on en wiki, but we can use 5 or 6, or even all of them - those articles will definitely grow. Pula and Dubrovnik could also use some more photos of buildings. It's great that you want to help. And having worked for an NGO is also something to be proud of. Thanks! --Zmaj 14:05, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, just one more thing: can you upload them on the commons category? --Zmaj 07:01, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

OK, I'm a bit busy at the moment, but I'll start to upload some as and when I have the time over the next few days. Cordless Larry 15:36, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

I'll add the photos here as I upload them:

How do I add them to the Commons category, Zmaj? Cordless Larry 07:34, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, wrong choice of words. I meant to say you can upload them on the Commons just like you upload them on en wiki (you just need to log in first). If you log in under the same name as here, I'll go check it out and categorize your images for you, i.e. put them in galleries under appropriate towns, so you just have to upload them and that's it. BTW, always specify you made them, they're very fussy about copyright over there. You probably know this, but I'll say it just in case: when you upload an image on the Commons, it becomes available to Wikipedias in all languages as if it had been uploaded on them, so you're doing everybody a favor. --Zmaj 11:02, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Great, thanks for the help. Does this mean that it's easier for me just to upload everything to the Commons rather than to the EN version in future? That would save doing it all twice, and the images would still be accessible on the EN Wiki - correct? Cordless Larry 11:38, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Correct. Most people don't do it because they either don't know about it or don't have the copyright sorted out. --Zmaj 20:41, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Once I've uploaded a file to the Commons, how do I place a thumbnail of it in Wikipedia? Cordless Larry 18:46, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

A thumbnail? I don't understand, but anyway, you can use such files in all the same ways as if you uploaded them in Wikipedia. --Zmaj 20:52, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

I meant a thumbnail as in the small picture above. It's working now - thanks for your help. Cordless Larry 20:54, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Now that I've transferred my current photos to the Commons, Zmaj, do you think you could request any duplicates on the HR Wiki to be deleted? Looks like you uploaded them, so they should be easy to delete. I've spotted these so far:

I've also edited the HR Wiki's Osijek page to use the Commons versions of the files, so these should be OK to delete. Cordless Larry 23:55, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

I'll delete them, no problem, I'm an admin on hr wiki :) --Zmaj 11:46, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks Zmaj. Cordless Larry 13:37, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Deleting your own work

I notice that you nominated Image:Restored wooden building Vukovar.JPG for deletion on WP:IFD. Did you know that if you are the only person who contributed to a page, you can add the {{db-author}} tag to it to have it deleted? It's faster than the regular deletion process and saves you typing a load of reasons. Stifle (talk) 21:15, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Great, thanks for letting me know. Cordless Larry 21:29, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bergen

Can someone tell me why the redirect at the Bergen page isn't working? Cordless Larry 15:18, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

The redirect is working fine. What's happening to make it not work? J Ditalk 15:19, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

OK, it's working fine for me now too. It just didn't for about 20 minutes, so I was getting worried. Thanks anyway. Cordless Larry 15:20, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

No worries. J Ditalk 15:22, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] FBiH

Hey, I respect what you are doing. Bosnia and Croatia have pretty much the same atmospheres. (Not as much comparing the coastlines), but in general central and eastern Croatia. Beautiful places in both countries, still rebuilding after the war. I like both countries.

About your question, I will try to find out some info through research and a user from both the bs. and hr. wiki's who has been adding correct info (as my research proves).

So, how do you like the areas of the former Yu.

Thanks and greetins from Chicago, Kseferovic 18:42, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

I like them both, and I've been to Serbia too. Thanks for your offer of help. Cordless Larry 18:45, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Article deletion

Why is the article I wrote up for possible deletion? I was just stating facts.

If you don't sign your comment (using ~~~~), I don't know who you are, so I can't tell you why I nominated it for deletion. Cordless Larry 21:40, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ethnicity and Provincialism in Pakistan

Hi, I noticed that you nominated Ethnicity and Provincialism in Pakistan for speedy deletion; thanks for your contribution. The rationale you used "reads like an opinion piece" is not a valid criterion for CSD. If the article is POV and can be fixed, the remedy is editing. If you think the article is hopelessly POV, then please consider nominating it for AfD. --- Deville (Talk) 19:46, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip. I'll list it as AfD. Cordless Larry 19:47, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] London edit

I was just about to edit that one! Seems the same person has just edited Bluewater as a 'Super' Regional Shopping Centre and that Dartford is a london Borough! Cheers anyway--Screen42 19:35, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Hi, you wrote me about my article "Žurnalistická etika" from today morning. It was completely my mistake. I was translating "Journalistic ethics" for Czech Wikipedia and I saved it into my favourite English Wikipedia by mistake. I didn't know how to delete an article, but as I see, the problem was solved immediately.

I see you've been to Czech republic, hope you liked it! Paxik 19:37, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

No problem. Now that you mention the English translation of the title, it makes sense. If you create an article by mistake, and you're the only author to have edited it, you can have it speedy deleted by tagging it with {{db-author}}. I liked the Czech Republic, and I'll get back one day because since I went a couple of years ago, I've met friends who live in Prague. Cordless Larry 19:42, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Suchita Chaudhry

Hi Larry, I am not Dr. Suchita Chaudhry. I have created this page as I thought this info will be useful for people doing Dengue virus research. I am not sure what makes you think that Moinjnu is Suchita Chaudhry. Anyhow, I don't know much about wiki policies, can you please explain why this article should be deleted, probably then I can give my explanation. Thanks, Moinjnu —Preceding unsigned comment added by Moinjnu (talkcontribs) 12:39, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi. Sorry for mistaking you for Suchita chaudhry. I presumed that because you created the article, you were her. Apologies for that. The reason I'm supporting the deletion of the article is that I don't think the subject is notable (see WP:BIO), and the article violates WP:NPOV (e.g. "Dr. Suchita Chaudhry is a good scientist"). If you feel that the article should stay, you should edit it to state why she is notable, and to make it more neutral. You then might want to leave a comment here saying that you have done so.
PS: When leaving comments on talk pages, please sign them by placing four tildes ~~~~ after you comment. Cordless Larry 11:48, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] UK literature list

Hi Larry. On balance, I still see the OK literature list as untidy and subjective, although the version as last edited by you was better than the one I first opposed. I have deleted it again mainly because I object to Mark Thomas imposing his minority view. Unfortunately that user has a recent history of multiple disrespect for WP:BLP, WP:NPA, WP:3RR and WP:NPOV and I have to admit to developing a bias against him. If you think your last version should be restored, perhaps you could put these thoughts on the talk page. Viewfinder 15:07, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

That's fine. I was just trying to make the list a bit more readable, but you're right - it can stay out until we develop something better. Cordless Larry 15:38, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
Unfortunately the list is back, put back by a likely puppet of Mark Thomas, in the metaphorical sense or possibly even in the literal sense. If other editors think this is an appropriate situation for Whac-A-Mole then I will support them but otherwise I suppose it can stay. Perhaps it can be reduced to more encyclopedic proportions (no more than six in each category, say) but I am not the right person to judge whom to keep and whom to delete. Viewfinder 18:21, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
I have my suspicions about Sarah Williams and MarkThomas. I'd support some kind of investigation. Then again, they could easily just be users who happen to have similar viewpoints - hard to judge. Cordless Larry 18:31, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Prospect article link

Great link! I didn't even know Stephen Oppenheimer had a new book out. His thesis regarding a single migration out of East Africa has garnered many adherents over the last four years. -- Gerkinstock 22:22, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

No probs. I got an e-mail about the contents of this month's Prospect and spotted the article. I thought it might be useful for the background to the Immigration to the United Kingdom article, and then I saw that there's an Oppenheimer article too. Cordless Larry 09:43, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Warren, Pennsylvania

Thanks for removing link spam from Warren, Pennsylvania, however you might want to be careful as you also removed the navigation box for Warren County {{Warren County, Pennsylvania}} (see Template:Warren County, Pennsylvania). I put the navbox back in and found the city's official website and added that as well. You have very nice pictures by the way - thanks for sharing them on WP and Commons! Take care, Ruhrfisch 21:02, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Oops, sorry about that. I was obviously being over-eager to get rid of that spam. Cordless Larry 21:10, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
  • No problem, thanks again for weeding out the link spam. Ruhrfisch 01:04, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Right. Seems other people agreed with me since it's been deleted. Please don't create new articles unless you have something constructive to say. Cordless Larry 22:47, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Brookfield Community School

Hi Larry. I have just removed the speedy deletion tag on this article, as non-notability is not a valid criteria for speedy deleting an article on a school. If you still wish to have the article deleted, I suggest you nominate it at WP:AfD, however, notability of schools is fairly controversial, and it probably will be kept. JPD (talk) 11:01, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

OK, fair enough. I'll leave it as there seem to be many of these articles and I don't want to pick on one in particular. Cordless Larry 11:05, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] thanks

hi thanks for the welcome message :) there is something you could help me with, I couldn't help but admire your user page, just wondering how to get all those graphics on mine. thanks The big moose 11:50, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Feel free to copy and paste the content from my user page by visiting it and hitting edit. You'll obviously need to modify it to reflect what you want on your own page, but perhaps the best way is just to experiment with it. It's your user page after all, so it doesn't matter if it takes some time to get it right - no one's going to come along and delete it. If you make a start and get stuck, let me know and I'll see if I can edit it a bit myself. Cordless Larry 11:55, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
ok thanks for your help The big moose 12:04, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 3 changes

thanks for letting me know about the three changes rule, is there a page with a list of rules I can look at for future reference? --The big moose 14:07, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

There's not really a single page, but I think the three places to refer to are Help:Contents/Policies and guidelines, Wikipedia:Simplified Ruleset and Wikipedia:List of policies. The list of policies is probably the best place for a general overview of the rules. Cordless Larry 14:22, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tag-springing copyrighting violation

Hi there Larry, I've taken the rules listed in the tag-springing article from a guideline website, however I'm in contact with the person who originally wrote it (hence wanting to help supplement it with the Wikipedia article - should I have wrote it in the references as oppose to linking to it as I did? - and is it practical to write an interpretation of an (I presume) approved set of rules? - if you could give me some advice I'd really appreciate it, as I'd be disappointed if I lose all of my work because of an error.. - Thanks, and you were quite right about the capitalisation. 86.144.22.96 19:35, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

OK. Firstly, there's no need to be worried about losing your work. I've blanked the article for now, but all of your work remains in the article history. As for what to do next, if you want the text to remain as it is, take a look at points 1 to 5 on the notice at Tag-Springing. I think it could do with re-drafting rather than asserting permission to copy it wholesale. That way, it will read more like an encyclopedia article. If you need any help doing so, I'll be happy to assist.
By the way, are you Benjamesthompson? If so, you should probably sign in so that your edits don't appear to be by an anonymous IP address as they are at the moment. Cordless Larry 19:39, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A vandal

I have caught a vandal repeatedly vandalising McDonalds ( 66.244.236.129 ) that is his IP address, I have seen him several times on the recent changes list, is there anything I can do to get him stopped? --The big moose 20:27, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

The vandalism policy is set out at Wikipedia:Vandalism. The problem with IP addresses is that it's hard to tell if the same person is committing the vandalism each time. This IP seems to have a history of vandalism, so I've placed a final warning on its talk page. Cordless Larry 20:30, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
yes I did that myself, the warnings say that "you will be blocked" if you re-offend etc.. but im unsure how to actually block them or get them blocked The big moose 20:32, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
If they continue to vandalise after being given a final warning, you can list them at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Note the policy regarding listing of IPs though. Cordless Larry 20:35, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
I've listed that IP address myself since it seems blatant and persistent vandalism. Cordless Larry 20:38, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I agree

I agree with your comment at User talk:80.6.32.80. A "blatant vandal" template warning for a new editor making what they no doubt thought were good faith spelling corrections is excessive biting. I changed the tag to a more suitable one. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 21:36, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. Even if they turn out to be a vandal, I think people deserve a chance when the changes they make aren't obviously malicious vandalism. The only other edit they've made is to add a {{fact}} tag to Universal Media Disc, which is clearly not vandalism. Cordless Larry 21:38, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] James Patrick Dunne

I accidentally removed your {{autobiography}} and {{wikify}} tags from this article, but only because I thought I had added them myself. The confusion arose because there exist two identical versions of this "article," one called James Patrick Dunne and one called James Dunne, and I had added those same tags to the duplicate article -- but thought about it again and replaced those tags with a {{likeresume}}. Feel free to restore your original tags if you wish, or leave the {{likeresume}}. Your call --Rrburke 03:38, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

No problem. Looks like they've both been deleted now anyway. Cordless Larry 08:45, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Oklahoma State Reformatory

Hello Cordless Larry,

I am a student at DePauw University. Yesterday I was in the middle of posting an article pertaining to the Oklahoma State Reformatory when the site was suddenly blocked. My introduction that I posted was not complete, nor is the rest of my article. I was wondering if you could unblock the site so that I may complete my article and show you that I have sufficient resources for my information. Once completed, I am sure that you will find my article worthy of being posted on Wikipedia.

Thank you!

Alex Gribbin —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 163.120.73.102 (talk) .

Hi. There's no reason why you shouldn't be able to edit the article. It's not locked (I'm not an administrator, so I couldn't do that even if I wanted to), and your IP address isn't blocked either (by the way, please sign your comments on talk pages such as this by typing ~~~~ after you comment, which saves people having to work out who you are). You should be able to go ahead and edit the article. You should also sign in, if you're the same Alexandragribbin 2010 who was editing the article yesterday. [edit] Bosnian War article

Where were you to put the neutrality template when the article said that Bosniaks are serbs and croats? You should become more neutral. Bosoni

Hi. I left a comment on your talk page explaining why I tagged the article for weasel words. I think we both posted comments on each other's page at the same time. If I'd have spotted the claim that Bosniaks are Serbs and Croats, I would have flagged that as POV, don't worry. Unfortunately I didn't see it. I'm certainly not anti-Bosniak, I'm just trying to tread the thin line between competing POVs. Sorry for any misunderstanding. Cordless Larry 13:52, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
I will fix the language to be more suitable, I'll work on it now. Thanks for your help. Yes I know that serb editors will revert, it was they who wrote Bosniaks were croats and serbs in the first place. I will ask for protection. Bosoni

[edit] My userpage

[edit] Wikiproject BiH

I think that there already exists a wiki project called Bosnia and Herzegovina. I am wondering are you explicitly asking it to be solely on Bosnia or are you using Bosnia as a synonymous word for Bosnia and Herzegovina. As far as I know Wiki project Bosnia already exists. I do believe that it needs a lot of work and improvements, which would require a lot of daily participation. Pozdrav (greetings) Kseferovic 20:03, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi. I was using Bosnia as shorthand for Bosnia and Herzegovina. I don't think there is a WikiProject already (Wikipedia:WikiProject Bosnia and Herzegovina is a red link). Cordless Larry 20:21, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
Sorry dude I thought you were talking about a portal. Yes, I'd be glad to help out with a Wikiproect BiH. Count me in, pozdrav Kseferovic 05:35, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Notability tag

Hey Cordless Larry,

I was just wondering what you would like to see me do so that the notability tag may be removed from my article's page.

Thanks —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Alexandragribbin 2010 (talkcontribs) .

Hi. I'm presuming you're talking about Oklahoma State Reformatory (you need to state what article you're talking about and sign your comment by typing ~~~~ after it so that I know who you are without having to work it out). To answer your question, you should take a look at Wikipedia:Notability for the guidelines on notability. You also need to format the article in the correct style, as per Wikipedia:Manual of Style. Cordless Larry 16:24, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] new user error

Hi. Thank you for your welcome message. I got one from Nawlins about spamming because I added some links to pages to which I had added information. I am a newbie and just learning the ins and outs of using Wikipedia, so I apologize for the infraction. Perhaps I was misinformed, so I am writing to ask you for clarification. (I tried writing to Nawlins, but your page is more newbie friendly for communicating with you, hence my contacting you . . . and I'm not sure I'm even doing this correctly.)

I do a lot of researching -- and a whole lot on the Internet. I knew of Wikipedia, but had never delved into it and had never considered writing on it. A friend told me I should put some of my gained knowledge to work by adding information to Wikipedia pages. So I did. In speaking with another person, they told me I should add links to the places from where I get information. So I went back in and added the links -- and those links were to commercial sites because those sites were the starting places of the research I did on the information I added to the Wikipedia pages. Are links to commercial sites forbidden even if they are the source of the information added to the topic OR was the problem created because I had added a slew of links to commercial links all at one time OR was the problem created because I didn't put the links to the exact area on the commercial site from where I got some of the information? Alwolff55 16:37, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

It's hard to say without knowing which article you added the links to. Commercial sites are fine as long as the links are there to provide references for statements in the article, but there's a fine line between referencing and giving the impression that you're trying to advertise. If you let me know the article title, I'll take a look for you. Cordless Larry 18:39, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Images on Old Joe

Just to tell you, when you give a defined size for an image on Wikipedia - like 275px - it means the image may appear differently depending on what resolution screen you have. For example, if you have a very high res screen, the image will appear tiny and totally unrecognisable. If you want to know more, see this discussion about a user who did something similar. Thanks and happy editing! - Erebus555 19:21, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

OK, thanks. I didn't realise that. I'll change it back. Cordless Larry 19:23, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Old Joe Bell Weight

  • All I seem to be getting now is pages that get their info from Wikipedia! Sorry! Cls14 21:54, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
  • I got all my stats about Big Joe from the net. Can't even find that darn page now. Cls14 22:05, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
  • Good find with that page that lists all the weights of bells in order. I did just find the Med School guide page but it wasn't the one I found the info on, lol. I think that is lost forever. I'd go with the 6,100 odd kg's. Seems reliable. I presume it was you who has made the page a lot longer, having read books about the tower. Good work! Cls14 22:14, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

I should have realized you didn't know category moving is a manual process. The category has to be changed in every template and on every page it appears on, and there's a backlog of doing so, which means they will get to yours in a few days. If you know how to do it, you can do the process yourself. -N 19:56, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] I didn't directly copy text at Uttara University page

If you have a look at the whole article then you can see that I am writing this article. I took help from the website to organize the history part. But, rest of the part is written by myself and it's really irritating while writing something with lot of concentration and some one is disturbing again and again. By the way, I am a Lecturer of this university and I know better than you what to write about the university. If you are an admin then I hope you will show your patience and see what I am actually doing. Thanks - (Niaz bd 16:46, 17 June 2007 (UTC))

OK, but I think you need to edit the text more because whole sentences are exactly the same as those on the website. Cordless Larry 16:48, 17 June 2007 (UTC)
Actually you visited Uttara University article when I just started it. At that time I was trying to give it a structure and then I modified it properly. Sorry for being impolite. Regards, Niaz bd 15:14, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
No worries. Good luck with the article. Cordless Larry 15:23, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your recent edit

Hi Cordless Larry, I've just gone through Uttara University. It seems to me there's no copyright violation there. The article has just started with infobox and a little statement. Those infos don't fall under copyright violation. And they will remain same in everywhere. Please check properly before you tag any article.Best regards.--NAHID 16:49, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

The copyright violation was in the history section. Cordless Larry 16:51, 17 June 2007 (UTC)
For example: UU "was founded as a Private University by Dr. M. Azizur Rahman, an economist of international repute, with an idea of setting up an affordable institution of quality". That's taken from http://www.uttarauniversity.com/about.htm. Cordless Larry 16:54, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Unusual Adoption Request

Hi! Im an English teacher in Toluca Mexico (west of Mexico City). My Advanced B classes will be contributing to Wikipedia as the focus of their English course for Fall 2007. I am looking for people who would like to mentor my students (who will be working in groups) as they do the following assignments: Edit and article (adding a citation), writing a stub with a citation, translating an English language article for Spanish Wikipedia and for the final project, writing a full article for English Wiki (they can expand on the stub mentioned previously). What I would like to do is put a list of "mentors/adopters" on my talk page as a kind of short cut for my students, who have limited time to get things done. The semester begings Aug 6, but the real Wikipedia work wont begin until the beginning of Sept. If you would like to add your name to my list, please go to my talk page and add it there, perhaps with a short introduction, if you like.

Thank you!

I appreciate your help with the biography Cameron McCasland I updated the page with several links, to help the notability claim. I would appreciate any further advice in making the article better. Joe Wallace (talk) 02:22, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your work improving the article. I still think it sounds a bit like self-promotion by the subject, but the main problem remains notability. I'm not sure there's much you can do about that unless you have a citation that establishes notability as per WP:BIO. Cordless Larry (talk) 08:47, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] University of Birmingham

Hi Cordless Larry,

Could you please refrain from replacing the lower quality image of the University crest on the wikipedia entry.

The image of the crest is in fact copyrighted and permission has not been granted for it to be used in this way. I have replaced the image with one of lower quality for the good reason of the university not wishing for people being able to forge documents with a high definition image of the crest. We do however obviously wish for people to view and enjoy the crest (hence the low definition image).

Also the University of Birmingham is one of five other HEIs in Birmingham (University College Birmingham and Newman were recently granted degree awarding status).

I hope that you appreciate why the university is keen for the high definition image of the crest to be removed.

Kind regards, Infinity18ad —Preceding unsigned comment added by Infinity18ad (talkcontribs) 12:13, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

OK, well the university may be one of five HEIs in the city, but the way you've worded it is that it's one of five universities, which is not the same thing. University College Birmingham and Newman are not universities in their own right. On the crest, I apologise for the confusion - I'm sure the full-sized crest wasn't tagged as copyright when I last checked. That said, your low-resolution version seems to have been deleted. Cordless Larry (talk) 12:31, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
Looking at Image:Bham crest new.png again, it would already appear to be considered a low-res version of the crest. Cordless Larry (talk) 12:51, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Fair enough about the Uni College....seems a bit of technicality but never mind...in the sector we do however refer to the 5 HEIs of Birmingham. Seems the crest has disappeared....can't seem to fix the problem. Please feel free to use another image of the campus if you want to replace it. The crest has always been a copyright protected image belonging to the university. Thanks for co-operation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Infinity18ad (talkcontribs) 14:50, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

It may be a technicality but this is an encylopedia so technicalities are important. Actually, I think it's more than a technicality given that the University College Birmingham degrees are awarded by the University of Birmingham and Newman University College's by the University of Leicester so to describe them is universities is misleading. As for the crest, I will leave it to other editors to decide what to do since I'm not an expert on image copyright. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:08, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Sorry to pick you up on this again (enjoying the debate!). It is a mere technicality as in fact University College Birmingham and Newman now award their own degrees - hence their name changes. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Infinity18ad (talkcontribs) 09:20, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Are you sure? University College Birmingham states that "degrees are awarded by the University of Birmingham". Maybe the article just needs updating. Anyway, even if they do award their own degrees now, they're still not universities. Cordless Larry (talk) 14:37, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Some investigation on the UCB website suggests that they do not award their own degrees: "Our undergraduate courses are all accredited by the University of Birmingham and result in the award of degrees and diplomas of the University" (from here). Cordless Larry (talk) 14:41, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Kenneth Fowler

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Kenneth Fowler, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Kenneth Fowler.

The main concern is that the only possible source for this article is disappearing along with the publisher. The name is quite common amongst authors, there is even a contemporary historian of the same name with 5+ published books. I worry that there may be confusion with the name, and the confusion cannot be resolved since no sources exist to confirm the claims in the article. JackSchmidt (talk) 16:52, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

I have no problem with this article being deleted. I didn't create it, I simply tried to tidy it up recently. Cordless Larry (talk) 16:54, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

As with National Saloon Car Cup, what I know was that Tamiya and Hasegawa released a Castrol sponsored Honda Civic RC car and model ([1]) the latter was James Thompson's car, which he won the title in that car before he came into BTCC. Something I didn't think a notable non-European company would ever think of creating as the series wasn't much heard of outside the UK. Also BTCC drivers Kieth O'dor and Andy Middlehurst used to race in the series.
The only trouble is that it is now trickier to get information about the history of the series but what I got is a book called Showroom Stock Race Car Preparation (a 1992 book), there is one section that lists the Willhire 24 I would assume is the BDRC/BRSCC Saloon Car Championship which might be the previous name of the NSCC, I got a bit on an brief explanation on that book on how the race and class structure of the series, also the eligible cars, which might be useful to you. I understand your intentions. The point of NOTVOTE is that policy always outranks majorities, and policy clearly favors the title Romani People over Gypsies. [edit] Latin American communities in the UK

With some of the locations on the map it is completely obvious which ones they are, since there are no other large town/ cities near them, but I agree in London and the SOuth East it is hard to determine which places are which, due to the fact most areas have fairly large Latin American populations compared to national average, maybe this could be stated in the article and template, with several of the other 'northern' towns with large populations being included, due to the fact that I don't have the book. Thank you Stevvvv4444 | Talk 9:49, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

I guess it also depends on what you define as "fairly large Latin American populations". I've looked at the book again and Milton Keynes, which has the smallest South-American population of the places listed, has 210 people born in South America. Bear in mind that these census tracts are designed to represent about 44,500 people each, so that's only 0.47 per cent of the local population. Cordless Larry (talk) 12:27, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 06:09, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

If you look at the definition of hamlet you'll see that it's a small rural community (and that there is no legal meaning of the term in the UK), whereas housing estates can be in urban areas (and indeed part of other settlements such as villages, towns and cities). What is unencyclopedic in this article, so it can be changed?!?DavidPickett (talk) 19:30, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, I'll post an explanation on the article's talk page. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:42, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] The Botanic Inn

I added some references to The Botanic Inn. I think that notability is now demonstrated. --Eastmain (talk) 18:14, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Talk:Roma

I was about to undo all of that when you signed it -- he's refactored the talk page, which I thought was a 'no-no'? --Doug Weller (talk) 18:21, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

I don't think he's altered anyone else's comments, has he? Also, I've responded to a couple of his points so it might not be a good idea to revert now. I disagree with him profoundly but he should be allowed his say. Cordless Larry (talk) 18:27, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm leaving it. But he has a real problem with WP:CIVIL--Doug Weller (talk) 21:01, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
Indeed. He's angry that Roma sounds a bit like Romania (though they seem pretty distinct to me), and thinks that this is the place to correct this "injustice". I wonder if he's also requesting that the Italian Wikipedia stops calling Rome, Roma. Cordless Larry (talk) 21:16, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Duplicate Pictures

Hello the reason i keep uploading the same pictures is becuase i took these pictures myself but Wikipedia says that they will be deleted becuase they dont have a free image licence when i took these pictures myself. Why is this happening? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hurlfordkillie (talkcontribs) 18:58, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Uploading multiple copies of the same image won't get you around that problem - they will simply all be deleted in the end. What you need to do is give the images a license when you upload them. To do this, upload them here and select a license from the drop-down list. Hope that helps. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:03, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
You may also want to consider uploading them to Wikimedia Commons instead of Wikipedia, as discussed on that page, and give them more descriptive image names. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:06, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

I Have selected a free licence image hopefully that will work. Do you think it will atol ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hurlfordkillie (talkcontribs) 19:07, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

That should work. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:09, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Ok thats good. But if it doesnt what do you recomend --Hurlfordkillie (talk) 19:13, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

It will work. The problem before was that your weren't specifying any license, so editors weren't to know if you had permission to post the photo. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:16, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
Please also note that the link I provided is only for images that are your own work, not for third-party images. There is a different option here for that. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:21, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Recent Edits Kilmarnock

I see what you mean about the pictures - the text is all over the place now. I am concerned though when you say "Reverting all of their edits" who are "they" and what edits are you referring to? Would you be kind enough to clarify. I do however agree that many of the pictures are low quality and when they are acceptable quality they don't seem to be in the correct section? Many thanks (Mccarthystumble (talk) 12:17, 19 May 2008 (UTC))

Sorry, I'm referring to User:Hurlfordkillie. Cordless Larry (talk) 22:37, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
thanks for clarifying. I also need to ask what the sockpuppet means? (Mccarthystumble (talk) 10:28, 20 May 2008 (UTC))
Sockpuppets are multiple accounts set up by the same user, usually so that they can edit a page under more than one name and appear to be different people. See WP:SOCK. Cordless Larry (talk) 11:40, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
seems a lot of hassle for not a lot of gain. I would have thought a person would want all of their edits attributed to them (good and bad) to allow improvements. I say this because I have committed a few blunders through my inexperience but others have then contacted me and helped me out. I can see the advantages for a person intent on disruptive edits - so I guess it's as well there are ways of intercepting such activities. Thanks for the info (Mccarthystumble (talk) 11:57, 20 May 2008 (UTC))

[edit] Economy of United Kingdom

Thanks for your comments. However, I did reference it before you deleted my entry. So, next time, you may want to look carefully before reverting other people's entry. I do admit that my summary "UK needs to face the facts" was slightly biased, and I apologize for that. I wanted to point out the fact that although UK is the second largest economy by in Europe, it's GDP PPP Per Capita ranks quite differently. This will give a broader and more insightful view to people around the world about the true standard of living in UK(arguably linked with GDP PPP Per Capita more than GDP Per Capita). zcacb64 27th May 2008, UK.

I don't disagree, but my point is that you selected random countries to mention that are ahead of the UK in terms of GDP per capita. Why did you pick Hong Kong and Singapore rather than any of the other 21 countries ahead of the UK? Given that there are 21 countries ahead of the UK, I don't think we should be picking out random ones to mention in the introduction of the article. My point about referencing was in relation to this edit, but that's of secondary importance. Cordless Larry (talk) 23:01, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Balkans map

Hello. You removed the map with an explanation of "it doesn't correspond to the countries listed here". The "Current common definition" section states: "countries commonly included in the Balkan region" (dark green on map) and "Some other countries are sometimes included" (light green on map). Why do you think the map doesn't correspond to those definitions? Thanks. 3rdAlcove (talk) 19:16, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Because Croatia isn't dark green on the map, but is in the list of countries commonly considered to be part of the Balkans. Cordless Larry (talk) 20:19, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
Fair point -though Croatia is sometimes treated as a borderline case because of its being under Austrohungary rather than the Ottomans. I thought it'd be nice to have the other 'borderline' countries (Romania etc.) highlighted in a map. No biggie, in any case. Thanks. 3rdAlcove (talk) 21:41, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
I realise that but we clearly need to have consistency between the text and the map. The problem is that no one will ever agree on what countries belong where when it comes to that part of the article. Cordless Larry (talk) 21:46, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Balkans. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing. Please do not repeatedly revert edits, but use the talk page to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. If necessary, pursue dispute resolution. Alokin (talk) 17:43, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
