The Spirit of Aviation is the collective, positive attitude and actions of those people that take part in and contribute to aviation and have helped perpetuate it to what it is today. It extends as far back as aviation itself; when humans were first conceiving flight (see aviation history). The English word "spirit" comes from the Latin "spiritus" (breath). Aviation encompasses all the activities relating to airborne devices created by human ingenuity, generally known as aircraft.

In practice, The Spirit of Aviation is frequently discussed and referenced, and its meaning is generally conveyed and well understood despite the lack of formal and objective definition.
The Spirit of Aviation is -
- a celebration about the joys of new friendships and the love of aviation
- about flying safely with consideration for others on the ground, radio and in the air
- preparing well before every flight, and keeping complacency at bay
- actively listening and acting upon the advice of others who know better
- offering assistance as a way of supporting the community, despite the fact it may be ignored
- acting intelligently and showing strength of character when faced with difficult decisions
- sharing experiences good, challenging and bad; to support others through their aviation journey
- taking full levels of responsibility as a pilot – and taking them to the limit
- knowing when you’ve gone beyond your limits and consequently doing the right thing
- about growing capability within yourself and others through learning and practice
- appreciating the mistakes of others for the benefit of everyone
- accomplishment through volunteering
- about helping those less fortunate than yourself to get closer to aviation
- being around groups of like-minded individuals, sharing a common bond with people with similar interests to perpetuate a shared vision
- about being in the spirit, albeit nostalgic or contemporary

People who act in the spirit of aviation tend to -
- Push the boundaries of aviation - to help develop it
- Share their thoughts, skills and experiences openly and freely
- Help save lives and to avoid death
- Design, re-design, modify and construct a wide variety of aircraft
- Run great airfields and adopt a friendly club-like atmosphere
- Offer encouragement over criticism
- Face and overcome seemingly impossible situations
- Organise events, write books and authoritative works, paint or write music
- Enjoy exercising the priviledges that their aviation status gives them
- Have a Positive mental attitude
