[edit] AFL Templates

Some proposals I have to minimise the number of templates currently in use in the Wikipedia:WikiProject_AFL

[edit] Team names

There is debate about the merits of using templates for team names. To my knowledge the use of these templates is to ensure naming consistency across all AFL articles so that, by default, a single consistent format is used in all match statistics and tables and to possibly make it easier and short to type (i.e. {{AFL Ade}} instead of [[Adelaide Football Club|Adelaide Crows]]).

To this end, these templates are useful but I would foresee them eventually being subst'd once a definitive convention is established. I think the convention of say, "Adelaide Crows", is the best and most consistent (compare to, say, NBA and soccer team names) but there is still the possibility that the main article names of say, "Adelaide Football Club" will undergo further relocation due to the ambiguity of the word "football" and clashes with other football codes and leagues.

Until then, may I propose an amalgamation of the various {{AFL xxx}} templates with a single {{AFL Teams}} template that employs a #switch Parser Expression (see User:CoreyPlover/Projects/AFL Teams). This allows all team templates to be edited in one place.

Example:

{{AFL Teams|Ade}}

produces Adelaide Crows

[edit] Venue Names

Similarly to teams names, there is to option to create a single template for accurate and consistent venue names (see User:CoreyPlover/Projects/AFL Venues).

Example:

{{AFL Venues|MCG}}

produces MCG

[edit] Match statistics

There is already one template for detailed match statistics (see Template:AFLScorecard2007). I am unsure why there exists a 2006 and a 2007 version though. I would think that you could do all match statistics with a single template that switched between summary and detail (see User:CoreyPlover/Projects/AFL Match
