[edit] Ware, not notable
I couldn't find anything about this, except for few remarks on blogs and forums. Preston Ware did play it, see here, the B00 games where he has black. It is not in my copy of ECO. Not notable. Bubba73 (talk), 22:36, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- It is not listed under Semi-Open Game. Bubba73 (talk), 00:14, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
- I think it's notable because it's a response to White's most common first move. It's also of interest because Preston Wade was not a weak player, he played Paul Morphy in his day and for Wade to persist with this opening many times stands out as interesting itself. I've now cleaned the page up a little and wikified it somewhat.
[edit] Cornstalk, Corn Stalk or Wade Ware

- Seems that it's normally called Corn Stalk as two words. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/adam.bozon/unusual.htm http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~amos/chess/1164.html There is already a Wade Defence which is a different opening 1. d4 d6 so let's not confuse them.

- I typed Wade instead of Ware. Bubba73 (talk), 00:50, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
- My typo in fact. I realise now he;s called Preston Ware, was wondering why I couldn't find any info on this guy! ChessCreator (talk) 01:05, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Original of name
Wonder how the name Corn Stalk came about. Would be nice [to add] the origin of the name to the article. ChessCreator (talk) 01:27, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Unusual v's Irregular
Not sure which this opening is. ChessCreator (talk) 01:35, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
- Both! :-) Well, Irregular chess openings are odd first moves for white, so I'd say "unusual". Bubba73 (talk), 02:56, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Name "Cornstalk and notability
I have been wondering why this opening is called the Cornstalk, Corn Stalk, or Corn Stalks. The origin of the name would be a really interesting addition to the arcticle.
- I found the name "Cornstalk Defense" on Chessmaster 10th edition.
- Regarding the notability of the arcticle, I really think that this is a notable opening. Preston Ware played against Paul Morphy, played in the American Chess Congress, and was a well known tournament player. Besides, I think all the responses to 1. e4 for Black should be "notable". —Preceding unsigned comment added by Chesslover96 (talk • contribs) 22:07, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
- Clean up above comment that made browser scroll forever..... ;) ChessCreator (talk) 23:43, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for cleaning my comment up! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.231.166.4 (talk) 23:46, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Inappropriate Link
I have deleted the "B00 Opening Names" external link. It was just a strange page on an otherwise porn infested site. Maybe this link being deleted will be beneficial to the arcticle's low reputation.Chesslover96 (talk) 23:51, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- The link seems fine to me I even checked the main site and don't find anything inappropriate. Maybe I just didn't check enough, but the link don't say much anyway, it was only initially when determining the name. Since then there are many sites to confirm it's use as the Corn Stalk as well as the Ware Defense. ChessCreator (talk) 00:04, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
Yes, you must not have seen what I saw, it was quite awful. I agree though, there are plenty of sites to confirm the name "Corn Stalk".--Chesslover96 (talk) 23:09, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
