Cornelis Saftleven

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cornelis Saftleven (c. 1607, Gorinchem - 1 June 1681, Rotterdam) was a Dutch painter of the Baroque period.

Born in Gorinchem into a family of artists, including his father Herman, and brothers Abraham and Herman Saftleven the Younger. Lived for a time in Utrecht with his brother.

Saftleven's subject matter covered many various things, including rural genre scenes, portraits, beach scenes, and biblical and mythological themes. Some consider his images of Hell to be his most individual contribution to Dutch painting [1]

Approximately two hundred of his oil paintings and five hundred of his drawings still survive.
