The Cork Suburban Rail (Irish: Iarnród Fobhailteach Chorcaí) network serves the Metropolitan Cork area in County Cork, Munster, Ireland.

There has been a suburban rail system in Cork since the middle of the 19th century however it suffered serious decline and line closures in the 20th century. The city also had a tram network - a short-lived horse-tram service in the 1870s and an electric tram system between 1898 and 1931.

The present Cork Suburban Rail network operates on two lines (Cóbh and Mallow), but another one is planned (renovation of the line to Midleton) under the Transport 21 plan. Stations in italics are not yet built or open, but will be under Transport 21. The reopening of these stations has been repeatedly delayed in the past, and completion dates recently been moved back from 2008 to 2010.

[edit] Midleton Line

The former Cork-Youghal rail line was closed in the mid 1970s and has lain derelict since, despite many calls and political promises for its re-opening. It is proposed under Transport 21 to renew the line as far as Midleton. Plans are for the line to be complete by late 2010. Construction will commence in 2008. The proposed route commences at Glounthaune and extends eastwards through Carrigtwohill and Midleton. The total track will be 10km (6.25 miles) long. It is intended that trains will run every 30 minutes during morning and evening rush hour periods, and every hour during off-peak and daytime periods. It is anticipated that trains will eventually run every 15 minutes.

Stations - Cork Kent (190,000), Dunkettle/Glanmire (16,000), Little Island, Glounthaune, Carrigtwohill (5,000), Midleton (10,000).

[edit] Other information

  • Some trains run directly from Cobh to Mallow and vice-versa, stopping at every station on the way.
  • Cork City Council is in talks with Irish Rail to provide a station in Kilnap, near Ballyvolane on the Mallow Line. It is hoped that the station will open in 2010 along with the three other planned stations and the re-opening of the Midleton line.
  • Irish public transport body CIE has proposed a modern urban trambus system for Cork, that will run on dedicated lines similar to the Dublin Luas transport system, but at 12% of the capital investment cost per kilometre of the Dublin tram service. This is awaiting as approval. It is expected that this will be centred on the main station in the city, and be integrated into the Cork suburban system.
