[edit] History

Cor Jesu was founded in 1956 by the Apostles of the Sacred Heart. The school was originally located in The Hill district of St. Louis. Cor Jesu moved to its present location on Gravois Road in Affton, Missouri in 1965. An expanded Library-Fine Arts Center was completed in 1987. In 2005 the most recent phase of expansion was completed with a new front entrance and courtyard, and a new building, called Clelian Hall. In 2007, the school entered into an agreement to purchase land bordering its campus from Grant’s Farm Manor owner Andy Busch. Cor Jesu’s acquisition will double the size of its campus and allow the school to potentially expand classroom and athletic facilities.[1]

[edit] Academics

Cor Jesu is well-regarded for its academics. In order to be considered for admission to the school, students must score in the eighty-fifth percentile or above in a standardized test such as the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. In addition to its college preparatory courses, Cor Jesu offers Advanced College Credit (ACC) courses to juniors and seniors in conjunction with St. Louis University. Advanced Placement courses are offered in History, Government, English, Spanish, French, Latin, Math and Science.

Cor Jesu students average a score of 27.5 on the ACT, seven points above the national average. Since the 2000-2001 school year, Cor Jesu has had 21 National Merit Finalists and 45 National Merit Commended Students. Ninety-nine percent of Cor Jesu students continue on to college or university studies.

Cor Jesu has been accredited by the North Central Association since 1971. In 1990-91, Cor Jesu was named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education.

In 1994, Cor Jesu was one of the first high schools in the St. Louis area to introduce the eight- block schedule. The block schedule allows classes (some are semester courses and some are yearlong courses) to meet for 85 minutes every other day.[2]

[edit] Athletics

Cor Jesu offers several sports programs for students: cross country, field hockey, softball, volleyball, golf and tennis in the fall; basketball, swimming, club racquetball, and cheerleading in the winter; and soccer, lacrosse, and track and field in the spring. The school has won state championships in several sports, and recently earned 2nd place in the 2007 State Volleyball Championship. The Cor Jesu racquetball team has won the Missouri State Championship both on 2007 and 2008. They have also placed 1st in the country in 2007 and 2nd in 2008 at the USA National High School Racquetball Championships.

[edit] Student Life

The Cor Jesu purpose is centered around God and the Church, which hopes to give students a solid foundation of faith for the rest of their lives. The Sisters who teach at Cor Jesu are Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and their devotion to the Sacred Heart can be seen and felt everywhere. On the first Friday of every month that school is in session, the entire school community celebrates Eucharistic liturgy. To further strengthen their faith, students participate in one yearly class retreat and volunteer to help others through a variety of service projects and co-curricular activities.

The school community's goal is to bring its mission statement to life: "By experiencing and sharing the love of the heart of Christ, the students become women of compassion and integrity, whose Christian values are reflected in decision-making, conduct and service to others.". Cor Jesu truly empowers women with the love and compassion of Jesus Christ.
