Wikipedia talk:Copyright on highway shields

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's against policy to have non-free images in Wikipedia namespace, as they are here. – Quadell (talk) (random) 18:30, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Other than showing them, how would you propose they be discussed? The policy exists to prevent decorative use and the creation of galleries. This usage is fine, at least while their copyright status is being probed. If WP's copyright policy says they can't be here so that people can see what they are discussing, then that policy is getting the way of improving the encyclopedia and can be ignored. However, once a consensus is reached, any images that are found to be under copyright and not usable as free images need to be removed forthwith. Vadder 18:48, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
You can discuss them by using text to link to the image discussion page. The name of the image discussion page is likely to be close to the name of the emblem, and names are not subject to copyright. True, WP:IAR suggests bending or breaking any rule that materially gets in the way of building a free encyclopedia. But if there are two things that IAR does not override, they are the law and meta:Foundation issues. --Damian Yerrick (talk | stalk) 20:10, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
