Reasons for changing speedy-delete template wording:

  • Correspond more closely with the criteria for speedy deletion (CSD)
  • Brevity/clarity
  • Avoid using italics in a way that might imply a direct quote of the CSD
  • Often saying "(See CSDXX)" rather than just "(CSDXX)" to avoid implying a direct quote

Implementation:

  • To delete "The reason given is:", for brevity, transclude new template Template:speedybase instead of Template:db-meta.

If the author blanks the page, this can be taken as a deletion request. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: No one other than its original author has made substantial edits to this page, and that editor requests its deletion or has blanked the page. G10 attack Pages that serve no purpose but to disparage their subject or some other entity (e.g., "John Q. Doe is an imbecile"). These are sometimes called "attack pages". This includes a biography of a living person that is entirely negative in tone and unsourced, where there is no neutral version in the history to revert to. Administrators deleting such pages should not quote the content of the page in the deletion summary, and if the page is an article about a living person it should not be restored or recreated by any editor until it meets biographical article standards. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: It is a page created primarily to disparage its subject or a biography of a living person that is controversial in tone and unsourced, where there is no neutral version in the history to revert to. • The material was introduced at once by a single person; and
    • There is no credible assertion of public domain, fair use, or a free license.
This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: This item appears to be a copyright infringement of {{{url}}}, and no assertion of permission has been made. (CSD G12) This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion as a blatant copyright infringement of {{{url}}}: the material was introduced at once by a single person, there is no non-infringing content on either the page or its history worth saving and there is no credible assertion of public domain, fair use, or free license. (See CSD G12)

[edit] Comments

I reversed the role of italics and non-italics so that it's still fairly easy to find the beginning of the part of the template that is unique, but it doesn't imply (as italics sometimes do) that it's an exact quote of the CSD. --Coppertwig (talk) 01:20, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Articles

Criterion for speedy deletion Current template wording suggested wording
a1 nocontext No context. Very short articles lacking sufficient context to identify the subject of the article. Example: "He is a funny man with a red car and makes people laugh." Context is different than content, treated in A3, below. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: It is a very short article lacking sufficient context to identify the subject of the article. (CSD A1) This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion as a very short article lacking sufficient context to identify the subject of the article. (See CSD A1)
a2 foreign Foreign language articles that exist on another Wikimedia project. If the article does not exist on another project, use the template {{notenglish}} instead, and list the page at Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English for review and possible translation. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: It is a foreign language article that was copied and pasted from another Wikimedia project, or was transwikied out to another project (CSD A2). a7 (Need to redirect db-a7 to db-bio?)
db-bio No indication of importance/significance. An article about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content that does not indicate why its subject is important or significant. This is distinct from questions of notability, verifiability and reliability of sources. A7 applies only to articles about web content or articles on people and organizations themselves, not articles on their books, albums, software and so on. Other article types are not eligible for deletion by this criterion. If controversial, as with schools, list the article at Articles for deletion instead. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: It is an article about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content that does not indicate the importance or significance of the subject. a8 (Placeholder to preserve numbering; superseded by G12.)

[edit] Comments

When the wording differs from the CSD, I put e.g. "(See CSD A7)" as opposed to just "(CSD A7)".

The parentheses in the db-a5 (transwiki) wording help to emphasize that the requirement that the transwiki-ing be complete applies to the Wiktionary case as well. --Coppertwig (talk) 01:11, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Images and media

Criterion for speedy deletion Current template wording suggested wording
i1 redundantimage Redundant. Any image or other media file that is a redundant copy, in the same file format and same or lower quality/resolution, of something else on Wikipedia. This does not apply to images duplicated on Wikimedia Commons, because of licence issues; these should be tagged with {{subst:ncd|Image:newname.ext}} or {{subst:ncd}} instead. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: This image is a redundant (all pixels the same or scaled down) copy of [[:Image:{{{1}}}]], in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not Commons), and all inward links have been updated (CSD I1) This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion . This image or other media file is a redundant copy, in the same file format, and at the same or lower quality/resolutions, of [[:Image:{{{1}}}]], which is on Wikipedia (not Commons), and all inward links have been updated. (See CSD I1)
i2 noimage Corrupt or empty image. Before deleting this type of image, verify that the MediaWiki engine cannot read it by previewing a resized thumbnail of it. Even if it renders, if it contains superfluous information that cannot be accounted for as metadata directly relating to the image data, it may be deleted. It is always possible for the uploader to correct the problem by uploading an image that contains only a good image plus acceptable metadata. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: This is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.(CSD I2).}} This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion as a corrupt or empty image. (Try previewing a resized thumbnail before deleting. See CSD I2).
i3 noncom Improper license. Images licensed as "for non-commercial use only", "non-derivative use" or "used with permission" that were uploaded on or after May 19, 2005, except where they have been shown to comply with the limited standards for the use of non-free content. [1] This includes images licensed under a "Non-commercial Creative Commons License".[2] Such images uploaded before May 19, 2005 may also be speedily deleted if they are not used in any articles. This image may meet Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion because it is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only" or "used with permission for use on Wikipedia only" which was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19 or is not used in any articles (CSD I3). This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion as an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only", "non-derivative use" or "used with permission" which either was uploaded on or after 2005-05-19 and has no fair use rationale. or is not used in any articles. (See CSD I3).
i4 unksource Lack of licensing information. Images in category "Images with unknown source", "Images with unknown copyright status", or "Images with no copyright tag" that have been in the category for more than seven days, and which still lack the necessary information, regardless of when uploaded. Note, editors sometimes specify their source in the upload summary, so be sure to check the circumstances of the image. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: It is an image with unknown source or unknown copyright status which has been tagged as unknown for more than 7 days (CSD I4).}} This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion as an image with unknown source or unknown copyright status which has been tagged as unknown for more than 7 days and still lacks the necessary information. (Remember to check the upload summary. See CSD I4).
i5 unfree Unused unfree images. Images and other media that are not under a free license or in the public domain, that are not used in any article, and that have been tagged with a template that places them in a dated subcategory of Category:Orphaned fairuse images for more than seven days. Reasonable exceptions may be made for images uploaded for an upcoming article. Use {{subst:orfud}} to tag images for forthcoming deletion. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: Unfree image which has not been used in any article for more than seven days ("orphaned unfree image") (CSD I5).}} This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion as an unfree image which is not used in any article and has been in the Orphaned fairuse images category for more than seven days, with reasonable exceptions for images uploaded for an upcoming article. (See CSD I5).
i6 norat Missing non-free use rationale. Non-free images or media claiming fair use but without a use rationale may be deleted seven days after they are tagged. The boilerplate copyright tags setting out fair use criteria do not constitute a use rationale. Offending images can be tagged with {{subst:nrd}}, and the uploader notified with {{subst:missing rationale|Image:image name}}. Such images can be found in the dated subcategories of Category:Images with no fair use rationale. If a use rationale is provided but disputed, this criterion does not apply. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: Unfree image with no fair use rationale uploaded after May 4, 2006 which has been tagged as not having a rationale for more than 7 days (CSD I6).}} This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion as a non-free image or medium claiming fair use but with no fair use rationale which has been tagged as not having a rationale for more than 7 days (See CSD I6).
i7 badfairuse Invalid fair-use claim. Non-free images or media that fail any part of the non-free content criteria and were uploaded after 13 July 2006 may be deleted forty-eight hours after notification of the uploader. For media uploaded before 13 July 2006 or tagged with the {{Replaceable fair use}} template, the uploader will be given seven days to comply with this policy after being notified. Invalid fair-use claims may be tagged with {{subst:dfu}} for review after a seven-day period, and the uploader may be notified with {{subst:no fair|Image:image name}}. Such images can be found in the dated subcategories of Category:All disputed non-free images. Non-free images or media with a clearly invalid fair-use tag (such as a {{logo}} tag on a photograph of a mascot) may be deleted at any time. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: It is a non-free image with a clearly invalid licensing tag; or it is an image that fails some part of the non-free content criteria and the uploader has been given 48 hours' notification (for images uploaded after 2006-07-13) or seven days' notification (for images uploaded before that date). Sources that do not have a license compatible with Wikipedia include stock photo libraries such as Getty Images or Corbis. Blatant infringements should be tagged with the {{Db-imgcopyvio}} template. Non-blatant copyright infringements should be discussed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion.
