Copernic Desktop Search is a desktop search utililty for the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems. It is designed to allow the user to instantly find a wide variety of items including documents, pictures, music, videos, e-mails, contacts, browser bookmarks/favourites and entries in the Internet browser history on the computer, external drives and network shares.

[edit] Overview
The purpose of Copernic Desktop Search is to perform an instant search across your entire computer not only on the names of the items, but also on the contents and metadata of these items. The first time this is run an initial index is created, which can take up to several hours depending the amount of items to be indexed but this is a one-time event. As items are added, changed or removed from your computer, Copernic Desktop Search makes incremental changes in the background using idle system resources. This solution for searching is in contrast to Windows XP's built-in search function which scans whole files instead of a list, unless Windows Indexing Service is turned on.
For a better understanding, consider this analogy: If one is trying to find a chapter, or a phrase used within the books in a library, Unless Windows Indexing Service is turned on, Windows XP's search will look through all the books in the library, whereas Copernic Desktop scans the card catalogue.
