The Copa Libertadores of 1972 was the 13th edition of the annual tournament. It is the South American equivalent of the European UEFA Champions League. Twenty teams contested the tournament and the winners of the tournament faced the European winners in the Intercontinental Cup.
The 1971 winners and runners-up of each South American country qualified for this tournament. The Uruguayan club Nacional had a bye because they were the defending champions. The tournament was divided into three rounds; the first group stage, the second group stage and the final. The first group stage had 19 teams divided into four round-robin groups of four and one group of three. This is due to Nacional being the defending champions and the winners the Uruguayan league in 1971. Each group had clubs from two different countries. The winners of each group qualified for the second group stage. Five teams joined the defending champions in two round-robin groups of three. The winners of each group qualified for the two-legged final. The final was between Club Atlético Independiente of Argentina and Universitario of Peru.
