Talk:Contributors to general relativity

[edit] Rosen
Is Nathan Rosen the Nathan J. Rosen in the list? I would think so, but there is no commonality between the credits in the list and the accomplishments listed in the article so that I can be 100% sure. --EMS | Talk 06:00, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Deser
The list includes a certain "Solomon Deser". I believe that should be changed to Stanley Deser, professor at Brandeis (http://www.physics.brandeis.edu/faculty/dese.htm). --216.75.143.162 05:24, 13 September 2005 (UTC) CCW
[edit] More possibilities
G. F. R. Ellis = George Ellis?
D. Finkelstein = David Finkelstein?
I'm even less sure about these. The hints are there, but not enough data. --EMS | Talk 07:00, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
- Hi, EMS, yes, good work, you helped me blue three links.
- Would you be interested in creating a similar category and list of "Contributors to cosmology"? In line with a previous discussion about distinguishing in these pages between gravitation theories in general and gtr in particular, I'd like to move some individuals to this category: Alpher, Guth, Hubble, Penzias, Wilson. OTH, I added Hulse and Taylor of binary pulsar fame to the "Contributors to general relativity" category since this work is often regarded as indirectly confirming the existence of gravitational radiation. (Not a test of gtr viz. other theories predicting a similar orbital decay, but I'm not inclined to parse that far down.)---CH (talk) 22:07, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

- Chris - I'm glad to have helped. As for the "Contributors to cosmology" list and category, it depends on what you are asking for. I can do the set-up for you, and with a list in place I can help you move and duplicate entries as appropriate for the categories. However, you are the one with the encyclopedic mind which is full of these details populate that list properly. My strengths are such that I can enhance a project like this, but the running start that you got it off to is beyond me.
- Overall, I have enough Wikiepdia projects on my hands right now. If anything I need to be pulling back a bit. For me, this is a bit of an addiction. As I am in the middle of making revisions to the paper on my alternate theory, that is not good. (However, the time spent here is not a complete loss. I keep picking up tidbits of information and testing my own understanding of Einstein's GR, with an appropriate understanding of the existing theory being absolutely essential to the successful elaboration of my own. It's a cute irony, but it is the reason that I want to do a bang-up job on Einstein's GR here.)
- Also, a better person to help build and tend the category may be Joke137. He is a cosmologist, and I have been able to work well with him. --EMS | Talk 23:41, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] "Cosmologists" catergory already exists
Here is an interesting discovery: Category:cosmologists already exists, and has 32 entries in it. This thing dates from a year ago. I'm not too sure what to do with it., since it includes Honorius of Autun (a 12th century monk) within it. In any case, the category exists, and is waiting to be used. --EMS | Talk 04:25, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Petrov
I think we can all agree on how his surname is spelt, but we may have some fun deciding on the correct spelling of his two forenames. I suppose the same comment applies to other people whose names are not English-based. ---Mpatel (talk) 16:31, August 8, 2005 (UTC)
- I also ran into this in creating the article on Evgeny Mikhailovich Lifshitz (aka "Yevgeny" or "Yegenii" and "Lifshits"). It can be helpful to announce articles on Russians; see Wikipedia:Wikiportal/Russia/New article announcements.---CH (talk) 16:54, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Links in descriptors ?
Regarding the description of each contributors' main work, Alan Guth seems to be the only one whose work is linked, i.e. we have: Alan Guth (inflation); should we do the same for all the contributors ? Maybe this would look too cluttered, but on the other hand, it gives direct links to the juicy articles; back to the first hand, anyone interested in this page is probably more interested in the biographies. Hmmm...---Mpatel (talk) 16:39, August 8, 2005 (UTC)
- I did the one link. I like the idea myself, and links are used in the elaborations in other similar lists. For the moment, let's give Chris a chance to comment first before starting on this. He got caught quite off-guard by all that I did late last week after he initially established this list. I think it would be nice if he was "on board" at the start for this enhancement effort. --EMS | Talk 19:38, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Which Segre ?
Is it Carrado Segre, Beniamino Segre or the one cited ? 'Segre type (characteristic) has to do with matrices/linear maps; the one cited, Emilio, doesn't seem to have studied this area (AFAIK), but the other two have (Emilio was really a physicist, and the other two were mathematicians: http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Indexes/S.html). Also, I know of at least two (living mathematical relativity) researchers who use Segre types regularly and are convinced that it's never spelt with that funny symbol (accent?) over the 'e'. All the linear algebra textbooks spell 'Segre' like that (without the accent thingy). Any views on this ? ---Mpatel (talk) 18:15, August 8, 2005 (UTC)
I think it's Carrado Segre. See, for example, reference 4 (and note the date of Segre's paper) in [1] which rules out Emilio Segre. Last chance to debate this - I'll wait 6 hours. ---Mpatel (talk) 11:18, August 10, 2005 (UTC)
- Hi, M, good catch--- it IS Corrado Segre. I've created a stubby biography, added the links to the Segre classification article, and added the citation to the original paper to the latter.
[edit] List of
Whoever moved this article to "List of contributors to general relativity", you broke all the links and really messed up edits I was doing simultaneously. I moved the page back. Please do not mess with the name again. TIA---CH (talk) 17:40, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
- Er, this now appears to have been an unexpected consequence of my own actions in trying to remove redirect pages from links! In any event, it seems to be fixed now. Sorry for the fuss---CH (talk) 20:35, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Quantitative progress
There are currently about 220 names listed here, and about 82 articles, so the growth in the number of existing articles does appear to be keeping pace with the growth in the names in this list. However, assistance in writing more biographies would be very welcome!---CH (talk) 02:41, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
- Hi C. I 've been deliberately trying to stay away from writing GTR biographies (as you've prob. noticed). I think EMS wrote somewhere that it might be difficult to get people to regularly contribute to this category (or something similar), and I agree with him. However, every once in a while, I might have a go at fleshing out some of the biographies (the ones I know about !); this weekend, I plan to make a comprehensive fleshing out of the Alexei Zinovievich Petrov article. In any case, 83 (albeit stubbies included) out of 220 bio's for a category that's only been around for 3-4 weeks is not bad, especially for a subject like GR. Of course, the more online links there are for each person (if any), the more likely it is that people will be tempted to contribute. ----P.S. - Chris - I will receive a new e-mail address soon, and I'll send it to you when I get it - still settling in .... ---- ---Mpatel (talk) 16:13, August 16, 2005 (UTC)
Well, see the next section :-( CH 23:09, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Students beware
I created the original version of this article and had been monitoring it, but I am leaving the WP and am now abandoning this article to its fate.
Just wanted to provide notice that I am only responsible (in part) for the last version I edited; see User:Hillman/Archive. I emphatically do not vouch for anything you might see in more recent versions.
Good luck in your seach for information, regardless!---CH 23:09, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] David Maxwell
David Maxwell links to a disamb. page but the one who is working on GR is not in the disamb. list. Temur (talk) 20:52, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
