Conquistadores

Pedro Serrano and Catalina Fernandez, residents of Jerez de Badajoz, in the Province of Extremadura, western Spain, were parents of two soldier sons who came to the new world with their wives. It is believed that Pedro Serrano, also a soldier, had fought in the armies of Queen Isabela and King Ferdinand against the Moors during the early 1480's and in to the mid 1490's. The two sons were named Martin Serrano and Bartolome Fernandez. By 1519 Martin Serrano had joined the forces of Hernan Cortez, serving under the command of Don Cristobal de Oñate. Martin Serrano's first born son was also named Hernan and also known as Hernando, receiving his first name after the conquerer of Mexico, Hernan Cortez and his middle name Martin after his father. His full name was Hernan Martin Serrano who also became a soldier under the command of Cristobal Oñate and later uner Cristobal's son, Don Juan de Oñate.

I have traced my genealogy as far back as Hernan Martin Serrano and his wife Juana Rodriguez who were among the Don Juan de Oñate colonists. They stayed briefly in Zacatecas, Mexico (then known as New Spain) and then migrated north in to what is now the state of New Mexico, in the United States. History shows that the Martin Serrano family and the group of 130 families that went to the Americas migrated north. TheY never returned to Mexico nor to Spain and were regarded as "loyal colonists" in the state of New Mexico.

There may be others interested in knowing what became of these families. There are books written about this group if anyone is interested in seeking their ancestry.

I have entered this genealogy in to a software program that will allow me to send it to the largest Genealogical Society in the United States, (Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah). I am presently living in the Canary Islands but will be returning to the United States in June, at which time I will share this genealogy with anyone interested. I can be reached here until June at: Lizbet Tanner C/Prosperidad, Nº 32, 2a 38006 Sta. Cruz de Tenerife, Islas Canarias Espana

After June our address is: Lizbet Tanner 323 North Main St. Lindon, Utah 84042 U.S.A.
