[edit] Neologism prod
Since I don't have the time to really flesh this out right now, I'm gonna give a few sources that use the term, which ought to be useful in writing the article proper. I started with a search for "concept musical" at nytimes.com, hoping to get some reviews. This one refers to Man of La Mancha as a 'harbinger' of the concept musical, implying that the first real one was Cabaret. This review refers to A Chorus Line as the 'quintissential' concept musical. There are 25 results in total on that search.
musicals101.com has an entire "chapter" of their history of stage musicals devoted to the idea: 1970s II: Concept Musicals. The following chapter, in a manner similar to the above statement from the times, refers to A Chorus Line by saying that "The concept musical reached its peak with A Chorus Line."
