Isn't this the same thing as CONCACAF Champions' Cup Chupu 19:14, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

they are going to replace Champion's Cup with this- it will basically be the same thing but it will include a group stage. (Soccer fan 20:49, 23 May 2006 (UTC))

CONCACAF hasn't announced anything, so this article continues to be irrelevant. Gtrojan 21:47, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

This event is the now announced North American SuperLiga, is it not? That would make this page irrelevent.

[edit] US and Canada spots

Does anyone know (sourced) if the Canadian based teams in USA football leagues can take 1 of the 4 USA spots, I guess this can only apply for the MLS team?. I read that the Canadian MLS team (Toronto FC) and the 2 Canadian USL First Division teams (Montreal Impact, Vancouver Whitecaps) are eligible to compete in the COCONCACAF Champions League.[1] Also the Canadian Soccer League champion could be eligible too, plans to send a team to compite in the soon defunct CONCACAF Champions Cup were in their website. Well thats will be a Canadian Soccer Association's call. JC 13:38, 30 Jan 2008 (PST)

I dont know, but it would be necessary to know if Toronto FC is considered as an American team or not. If that was the case, Toronto is going to take a place to an American team. If not, Toronto is going to have to participate in the cup of Canada. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.56.118.83 (talk) 03:08, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

See: here Canada to create new club championship.
Toronto FC, Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps are Canadian teams playing in US leagues, apparently those 3 team will play a qualification round, also a new Canadian club championship will be announced soon, finally the 3rd North American country will have a competitive league. Anyone?

Getthomas I noticed you have deleted the logo from the article, perhaps you should check out this link where CONCACAF used the logo.

[edit] MERGE CHAMPIONS CUP AND CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PAGES

Yes, I know the CL is the new tournament, but the CC and the CL are both the top club football tournament of North America. It's the same situation with UEFA European cup changing its name and format to the UEFA Champions League, the past winners, history, records, etc of th european cup are included AND merged with the champions league page. The page will still be named the CONCACAF CHampions league but will include the champions cup page however with editing and mentioning that the name and format was changed. I think its useless making two pages for the same tournament, having two pages makes it seem the psat winners will be forgotten and stats will not be carried over. Just because its a new tournament does not mean it the past winners will be erased. It says the CONCACAF CL is modelled after the UEFA tournament, so shouldnt the CONCACAF page be like the UEFA tournament page? Please state your views and opinions about this, I hope we can come to an agreement about a necessary merge of the two pages. --216.211.102.162 (talk) 20:10, 24 March 2008 (UTC) --Muppeteer (talk) 04:02, 15 April 2008 (UTC) Not to confuse, I forgot to log in when i wrote this but the first signature is just my ip address

Another notes to add the AFC champions league also has both pages merged as they included their AFC CL's predecessor the AFC championship cup, they display its history and past winners, the AFC CL is merely a continuation of the top club tournament of asia, so this is even mroe of an incentive to merge the two articles--216.211.102.162 (talk) 23:57, 25 March 2008 (UTC) --Muppeteer (talk) 04:02, 15 April 2008 (UTC) Not to confuse, I forgot to log in when i wrote this but the first signature is just my ip address
I agree despite the name and format change it is still the highest inter-league cup competition for the CONCACAF confederation. Therefore previous records and results should be carried over as has been done with the UEFA Champions League. I've added Merger tags to both articles linking them to the discussion here. If there are no valid objections by May, following the final of the 2008 CONCACAF Champions' Cup, we should move forward with the merger. --JonBradbury —Preceding comment was added at 00:58, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

I also agree. They are basically the same thing in that it decides the CONCACAF Champion and decides who plays in the Club World Cup. Only the name has changed.Gethomas3 (talk) 02:59, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Why were the two articles merged already? Johnbradbury's suggestion to wait until May so people could discuss it before doing so seemed reasonable. NeilCanada (talk) 04:43, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

I don't think that the fact that the winner of the tournament still gets the right to go the Club World Cup is enough to consider this tournamnet to have the same history as the Champions Cup. The Champions Cup was contested by Cup Winners, whereas the Champions League will be contested by more than just Cup winners, also there will be a group stage. This is like comparing the UEFA Cup Winners Cup to the UEFA Cup. NeilCanada (talk) 05:51, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
The competition is not only made up of Cup winners. Especially for the MLS in the more recent incarnations of the format, there have been other ways of qualifying for the tournament. The 2007 as well as the 2008 Champions' Cups had spots available to the MLS Shield winners (the team finishing at the top of the regular season MLS table). The 04 05 and 06 competitions were open to the teams finishing top of the conference opposite of the MLS Cup winners. The 2003 competition was open to the MLS Shield winner and runner up. What's more, other teams from the Central American and Caribbean zones reached the Champions' Cup through a smaller competition which they qualified for based on their league performances. As for the group stages: only in the final year of the European Cup, 91-92, had a group stage. The preceding 35 years of the tournament prior to the final was contested by two legged knockouts. So this can be viewed as the same competition with a new qualifying system and format change, in the same way we consider the evolution between the first incarnation of the European Cup and the current Champions League to be the same competition, albeit with a new name and structure. --JonBradbury
Merge: The name and format are changing, but it's the same competition with a single shared history. The Cup Winners Cup analogy falls short since the UEFA Cup coexisted with the Cup Winners Cup before the latter competition was discontinued. A better analogy would be the UEFA Champions League and the old European Cup. They both share an article on the trophy. It also indicates a case where a competition previously only entered by winners was later opened up to runners up and maintains a shared history. krebbe (talk) 03:13, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
When merging these articles shall we follow the style of the UEFA Champions League then? For example the 'date founded' is listed as 1955 for UEFA. Shall we change the date found here to 1962? NeilCanada (talk) 15:16, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
Merge This is definitely an issue of rebranding, as opposed to a new tournament, and is misleading to change it, on a macro level. The specific reasons are well laid out above, and do not need rehashing. Nlsanand (talk) 01:31, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Defending champion

The distribution of the 24 spots doesn't seem to leave any room for a defending champion. Will the defending champion (or defending Champions Cup holder in the case of the first competition) not receive automatic entry? Or will they be taking one of their country's already-allotted slots (a system, it seems to me, that would work only until the first non-American, non-Mexican team won the tournament)? Binabik80 (talk) 18:23, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Nothing was mentioned in any of the press releases about previous champions getting an automatic spot. Also, with Concacaf having no coefficient system for leagues or clubs how would they fairly decide who to take away a spot from?NeilCanada (talk) 05:48, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Statistics

I started a statistics page. A couple tables on there have been posted elsewhere already. I made an all time Champions' Cup table, started an All time Champions League table, made a total semi finalists table, have a couple other things started that are still hidden until they are ready. I tried to format it after the UEFA Statistics page.NeilCanada (talk) 06:51, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Semifinalists

Do we even really need to add the semifinalists of the previous tournaments? The champions cup was a small enough as it is, but I think its really unnecessary to add the semifinal clubs, what do you think? --Muppeteer (talk) 03:30, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

I think its a nice to be able to see that on there, and looking forward to the Champions League I think it will be even more relevant. I think the page should be reverted back to include that again. In fact, if I knew how I would do that. NeilCanada (talk) 23:42, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
