I'm with the Band: Confessions of a Groupie
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I'm with the Band: Confessions of a Groupie is a 1987 memoir by former groupie Pamela Des Barres. It tells the story of Mela (her nickname), an isolated groupie that gets some kind of fame in the 60's by having wild nights with musicians and actors. "I'm with the band" is her anthem, what she uses to say to the managers and bodyguards that ask who is she, trying to protect the stars she stalks with hope. She later falls in love with Michael, a guy who's a musician, and reaches 'happiness'. In the 80's, Mela discovers a world of philosophy, psychology and thinking, and begins to love life and interests in discovering its sense, becoming a writer and writing this book. But apparently, Michael doesn't like this discovery she has and begins to be unfaithful; she feels that, but is still happy in her own way; with fears but thankfully, and without regrets about growing up and stop needing a man to be happy.
[edit] Trivia
- This 'fears' became true in 1991, four years after this book was released, when she divorced Michael. Now she lives alone with two cats, Dupi and Tupi, respectively. This is told in the ulterior book, Take Another Little Piece of My Heart: A Groupie Grows Up.
- Her real nickname is not Mela, is Pamela; this was a shorter way of calling herself in the book.
- Her name before marrying Michael was Pamela Gomes Miller.
