[edit] History[citation needed]
The school was founded by Rev. Mother Tarcisius in 14 January 1935. Rev. Mother Tarcisius believed that education should not be limited to English only but should be provided according to the needs of the society. Hence the school was opened as the Convent Chinese School with 12 kindergarten and primary students. Within 6 months, the number of students increased to 75 and was split to 3 classes. The teachers at the time were Sr. St. Henry, Sr. St. Agnes and Ms. Chang Zhi Qing (simplified Chinese: 张志清女士). In 1938, the school bought over a half wood half cement building which became no. 421, Jalan Datuk Keramat of today. By 1940, the school has a total of 300 students and can be claimed as a whole and complete primary school. The school expanded the building of that time to 14 more classrooms to accommodate the increasing number of students and created pedagogical classes for the students completed primary education.
In 1941, Japanese soldiers took over Penang and all Chinese schools were forced to close. After a tough 3 years and 8 months, the World War II ended in 1945 and all schools reopen. However, Convent Chinese School did not accept boys anymore and became the all girls’ school of today.
In 1947, the school abolished pedagogical classes and created secondary school. In 1950, the school introduced education in English and business subject classes.
In 1954, the classes are again insufficient for the large number of students under the administration of Sr. Pierre. Hence a building composed of 12 classrooms was build behind the compound of the school for the uses of secondary school. It is then the start of separation of the primary and secondary school administration and Sr. John of the Cross was given the administration of secondary school.
In 1959, another upgrade of the school is needed to provide a better studying environment for the student. With that, multipurpose hall, art and living skills classrooms, science classrooms and staff office is build within the grounds. By then, the school has 1,200 primary students and 1,100 secondary students in total. It was considered a rather full-size primary and secondary school.
In 1976, the primary school old building since 1954 was refurbished to a 3 storey centre, 2 storey wing building. In 1980, a committee to rise funding to build more facilities for the school was created and finally in 1984 the 4 storey high building was added to the grounds of the school. The building composed of a canteen, a larger multipurpose hall, more classrooms and a library. At that time, the secondary school has a total of 1093 students, 57 teachers and 50 classrooms.
[edit] School Badge
The school badge is of the Convents of the Infant Jesus. The symbolism of the badge is as relevant today as it has been over the centuries.
The centre of the badge is red with a silver band fringed with gold. Red traditionally conveys the message of love.
On the right is the holy book. To the Christians this is the Bible, to the Muslims the Quran, to the Hindus the Bhagavadgita, to the Buddhists the Dharmapada – wherever the teachings, which are the guiding principles, where their faith in God are found. This is emphasized for the Malaysians by the principles of the Rukun Negara Believe in God.
On the left is a Distaff and Spindle. This is the symbol of labour. In the ideal of work, the Convents are proud to be linked to the thousands of girls of a different culture, age and time who have passed on to them a noble tradition. Each of them today has their own part to play, manually and intellectually in the creative work of building a harmonious world.
In Malaysia, the shield is surmounted by a golden star and encircled by a garland of Marguerites with the school's motto – "Tulus dengan fadilat, Azam dengan bakti" (English: Simple in Virtue, Steadfast in Duty).
This star is a shining and guiding light which encourages all to live up to the vision of ideals and the five pointed star represents the five principles of the Rukun Negara, which are:
Believe in God
Loyalty to King and Country
Upholding the Constitution
Respect of the Law
Good Behaviour and Morality
The garland of marguerites is symbolic of purity and simplicity towards God, neighbours and selves.
The school badge is therefore a mark of honour for it shows the characteristic spirit of the Infant Jesus Convent girls around the world.
[edit] Motto
Simple in Virtue, Steadfast in Duty (simplified Chinese: 纯朴于德行, 勇毅于任务)
Simple in Virtue means being open and honest with others so that all can live in a spirit of family togetherness.
This simplicity calls for an acknowledgment of faults and an effort to overcome basic selfishness.
Steadfast in Duty means an awareness of the duty to be of service to others. This duty of giving of self demands energy because it presents itself daily and hourly. Only when one puts self and petty interest aside can steadfastness in duty is fully achieved. This service begins and ends at the end of the earth.
