Contention City, Arizona
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Contention City is a ghost town in Cochise County in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Arizona. Only a few foundations now remain of this boomtown, which was active in the days of the early 1880s silver mining made famous by Tombstone. It was the scene of a shootout between outlaw members of the Jack Taylor Gang and lawmen John Slaughter and Jeff Milton in 1887.
The town derived its name from a silver mining claim, over which there was unusual rivalry among the claimants. Contention City now sits in the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. Hikers can view the townsite easily along the river just north of the Fairbanks ghost town.
The town is the setting for the finale of the 1957 western 3:10 to Yuma and its 2007 remake.
