Conrad Baker (February 12, 1817–April 28, 1885) was the governor of the U.S. state of Indiana from 1867 to 1873. He was a Republican. Baker had also served in the Union Army during the Civil War, rising to the brevet rank of brigadier general.[citation needed]

Conrad Baker war born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, on February 12, 1817. There he attended public school and later Pennsylvania College in Gettysburg where he studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1839.[1]
In 1845 he entered politics and was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives. He unsuccessfully ran for Lieutenant Governor of Indiana in 1856. He entered the the army during the American Civil War and served in the calvary rising to the rank of colonel. He was honorably discharged on September 12, 1864.[2]
He was elected as Lieutenant Governor in 1865 in the ticket with Oliver Morton. Morton took a period of poor health in 1865 and Baker served as Acing-Governor for five months until his health recovered. When Morton was elected to the Senate in 1856, Baker succeeded him as Governor. In 1868 Baker was reelected to the position of governor. During his administration a Women's Prison was built, a Soldier's Home to assist the returning veterans, and a new state school in Terre Haute.
After Baker's term as governor expired he retired from public life and reopened his law office. He died on April 28, 1885, and was buried in Evansville, Indiana.[3]
