Conquest of Chile

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The conquest of Chile is an historical period that includes the period from the arrival of Pedro de Valdivia to Chile in 1541 to the death of Martín García Óñez de Loyola, in the Battle of Curalaba in 1598. This was the period of Spanish conquest and establishment of their cities of Santiago (1541), La Serena (1544), Concepción (1551), La Imperial, Valdivia, Villarrica (1552), Los Confines (1553), Cañete (1557), Osorno (1558), Arauco (1566), Castro (1567), Chillán (1580) and Santa Cruz de Oñez (1595) despite setbacks in the Arauco War. This period ended with Loyola's death and the loss of their cities in Araucania. The Arauco War continued but the Spanish were never able to recover their prior control in Araucania and were often on the defensive in southern Chile thereafter.
