[edit] Overview

Connolly Drive is a major road in the northern suburbs of Perth, Australia. It extends in a north-south direction from a T-junction with Shenton Avenue in Currambine to Butler. A portion of Connolly Drive north of Kinross opened on 27th August 2007. [1][2] Connolly Drive eases traffic flow from Marmion Avenue, between suburbs of Currambine, Kinross, Clarkson, Merriwa, Ridgewood and Butler. The section between Kinross and Clarkson opened up a connection right from Butler down through Currambine. The opened section was to assist with increased traffic flow once the Mitchell Freeway opens in mid-2008. [3]

Opening of this section has in fact created a bottleneck between the roundabouts at Burns Beach Road and Kinross Drive. The City of Joondalup has promised that the stretch of Connolly Drive through Kinross will soon be dualled [4], to relieve this. Further issues have been caused in the Kinross stretch with the opening of the new stretch of Connolly Drive. The road is now so busy that users of Kinross Central shopping centre turning into Selkirk Drive, find this northbound right hand turn is now very hazardous. It is not clear whether this junction will be upgraded with traffic control when City of Joondalup widen this stretch of the road.

Connolly Drive is currently a two-way road for most of its length, and changes to a dual carriageway through north of Kinross. A small section between Neerabup Road and Riverlinks Drive, Clarkson changes to a boulevard single carriage way. A number of major intersections cross the road, most of which are controlled mainly by roundabouts. The most significant intersections are with Shenton Avenue, Burns Beach Road and Hester Avenue.
