Condon is a city in Gilliam County, Oregon, United States. The population was 759 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Gilliam County[3].

Condon is located at 45°14′8″N, 120°11′6″W (45.235588, -120.185060)[4].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.2 km²), all of it land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 759 people, 343 households, and 215 families residing in the city. The population density was 887.3 people per square mile (340.8/km²). There were 413 housing units at an average density of 482.8/sq mi (185.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.50% White, 0.40% African American, 0.79% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.13% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.53% of the population.

There were 343 households out of which 22.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% were married couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% were non-families. 34.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.72.

In the city the population was spread out with 19.6% under the age of 18, 4.0% from 18 to 24, 21.9% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 27.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 48 years. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $32,667, and the median income for a family was $40,000. Males had a median income of $30,500 versus $21,042 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,481. About 3.6% of families and 5.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.1% of those under age 18 and 5.1% of those age 65 or over.

Condon was originally settled as Summit Springs; named for the springs that still flow at this hilltop location. Daniel Tierney, railway agent for the town from 1906 to 1931, was among the city's founders.

Famous former residents include two Nobel Prize winners. During their youth, two-time Nobel-winner Dr. Linus Pauling (1954 Chemistry and 1962 Peace) and Dr. William Parry Murphy (1934 Medicine) lived in Condon. The state airport in Condon is named Pauling Field.
