It was founded by Taner Ertekin, one of the founders of the Horizon Science Academies (HSA) in Ohio. The first two Horizon Science Academies opened in Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio in 1999. The founders of HSA incorporated Concept Schools to expand their efforts in 2002. Additional charter schools were opened in the Fall of 2004 in Toledo, Ohio and Chicago with an additional opening in 2005 Springfield, Ohio.
