[edit] Club

Roche played his club hurling with the famous St. Finbarr’s club on the south side of Cork. He enjoyed some success at underage levels before winning his first senior county championship in 1965. This was later converted into a Munster club title. Roche won further county medals in 1967 and 1974. This latter win was once again converted into a Munster club title as well as an All-Ireland club title.

[edit] Inter-county

Roche came to prominence as a hurler with the Cork minor team in 1964. That year he had great success with the team, winning a Munster medal as well as an All-Ireland title. Roche subsequently joined the Cork under-21 team where he enjoyed further success. In 1966 he won both Munster and All-Ireland titles in that grade. The All-Ireland victory came after two replays.

By the late 1960s Roche had joined the Cork senior hurling team. He won a National Hurling League medal in 1969 before being selected for duty on the championship team. Roche won a second National League title in 1970, before winning his first senior Munster medal. Roche later collected an All-Ireland medal as Cork later went on to defeat Wexford in the first 80-minue All-Ireland final. 1972 began with Roche adding a third National League medal to his collection. A second Munster title soon followed, however, Kilkenny defeated Cork in a thrilling All-Ireland final. In spite of the loss Roche still collected his first All-Star award.

In 1974 Roche won a fourth National league title, however, Cork were soundly beaten in the Munster Championship. In spite of this he was presented with his second All-Star award. In 1975 Cork bounced back and Roche collected his third Munster title. The team looked likely to make it to the All-Ireland final, however, Galway defeated Cork in the semi-final. After this defeat Roche retired from inter-county hurling.
