The 2008-09 CONCACAF Champions League will be the 1st edition of the CONCACAF Club Championship football tournament, modeled after the UEFA Champions League. It will be replacing the CONCACAF Champions' Cup and will start in August 2008 and end in April 2009.[1] The winner will gain a berth to the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup.

[edit] Qualification
24 teams will participate in the 2008-09 CONCACAF Champions League from the North American, the Caribbean, and Central American zones. Below is the qualification scheme for the 2008-09 competition:
- The United States and Mexico each have 4 teams qualify.
- The Caribbean zone has 3 teams qualify via the CFU Club Championship[2].
- Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Panama each have 2 teams qualify.
- Canada, Belize, and Nicaragua each have 1 team qualify.

* Due to the 2007 US Open Cup winner (New England) already having qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League as the MLS Cup runner-up, Chivas USA has claimed the remaining United States spot as MLS's 2nd place overall team.
† Deportivo Saprissa won both the 2007-08 Invierno and Verano championships, so LD Alajuelense has claimed CRC2 as the team with the most points in the 2007-08 Verano tournament.
‡ San Francisco FC won both the 2007 Clausura and the 2008 Apertura championships, so Tauro FC has claimed PAN2 as the team with the most points in the 2008 Apertura tournament.
¥ C.D. L.A. Firpo won both the 2007 Apertura and the 2008 Clausura championships, so A.D. Isidro Metapán has claimed SAL2 as the team with the most points in the 2008 Clausura tournament.
[edit] Format
There will be a two-leg preliminary round for 16 clubs, with the 8 winners advancing to a group stage. The other 8 teams will be seeded and begin the competition directly in the group stage. The winners of the preliminary round and the seeded clubs will play in the group stage in four groups of four, with each team playing the others in its group twice, both home and away. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockout stages, which will consist of home-and-away elimination. The finals, in late April, will also be two-legged, home-and-away.

- 2 clubs each from the United States and Mexico.
- 2 clubs from Panama.
- 1 club each from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Canada, Belize, and Nicaragua.
- 3 clubs from the Caribbean zone.
Group Stage: (16 teams)
- 8 winners from the preliminary round.
- 2 clubs each from the United States and Mexico.
- 1 club each from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.

The draw was held on Wednesday, 11 June 2008 in New York City, USA. The first leg matches will be from 26 August - 28 August, while the second legs will be from 2 September - 4 September 2008.[11]
