[edit] Operation Provide Comfort – UK contribution

Hi

You said that the UK contribution to Operation Provide Comfort was Operation Haven, not Operation Safe Haven. But the eliteukforces link says Safe Haven and I’ve found another BBC link that says Safe Haven [1]. I found another link that says both names. [2] The Royal Marines website was no help. Were the names interchangeable? Unofficial? One British and one American? I’m going to leave it for now but do a little more digging around. If you have a definitive source (if there is one), that would be great. Chwyatt (talk) 11:17, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, not sure about a reference, but I actually took part in the operation. officially it was called Operation HAVEN, but the media seemed to insist on calling it Operation SAFE HAVEN after the so-called "safe havens" which we established for the Kurds. I am sure the misnomer is a result of this confusion. I am in no doubt that the official name was HAVEN. (Of note the UN used the same idea in parts of Bosnia later - Srebrenica - with disastrous results.) Commando1664 (talk) 11:41, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Fair enough. Come to think of it, HAVEN is more consistent with one word operation names for British ops. Cheers Chwyatt (talk) 07:19, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
