Washington State Route 531 (SR 531) is a state highway in the state of Washington, USA, getting its number from intersecting with Interstate 5. It extends 9.9 miles (15.9 km) from Wenberg State Park, west of Smokey Point, east to State Route 9 in southeast Arlington.
SR 531 begins at Wenberg State Park (off the shores of Lake Goodwin) and continues north along East Lake Goodwin Road until it meets with Lakewood Road. It heads east along Lakewood Road (which becomes 172nd Street), continuing until the junction with SR 9.
SR 531 became an official state highway on April 1, 1992. Due to growth in the Smokey Point area over the past decade, many road improvement projects have been completed, proposed, or are in progress to help alleviate the traffic congestion in the area. In the 1990s, the stretch from I-5 east to just west of 43rd Avenue NE was widened from two to five lanes and stop signs were replaced with traffic lights at the intersection with Smokey Point Boulevard. Traffic lights were also installed since then at the intersection with 67th Avenue NE. In 2006, the overpass with I-5 was widened from two lanes to six lanes. In 2009, construction will begin to have additional work done on this overpass. It is also expected that SR 531 will be widened between 43rd Avenue NE and 67th Avenue NE from its current two lanes to four (or five). Also, with recent commercial activity at Lakewood Crossing, additional road improvements are expected to help with traffic surrounding this area. (more...)
