The Compass House Emergency Center (or The Shelter) is just that. With enough room for up to 13 people, the shelter provides runaway and homeless youth from 12 to 17 years of age with immediate access to crisis counseling, a temporary place to live, a warm bed, and hot meals. They also find kind ears, as trained, caring professionals are always on hand to listen and give support.

Compass House has also particpated in the National Safe Place program since 2006. The Safe Place program allows youth ages 12-17 in a crisis situation to access help at local businesses and community organizations. In Erie County, all of the Tops Markets, NFTA Buses, Boys and Girls Clubs, Hispanics United of Buffalo, Gay and Lesbian Youth Services of Western New York and Coffee and a Spell are all Safe Places. Youth recognize the yellow and black diamond symbol and know they can get assistance.
