[edit] velar or palatal ?

My knowledge of middle English phonology is a bit rusty, but isn't the fricative in night palatal rather than velar? --Janneman 18:47, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Probably, but we don't know for sure. At any rate, there was no phonemic distinction, so representing it as /x/ in phonemic slashes is okay. —Angr 19:15, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
This site at least confirms my feeling that it probaly rather was palatal after front vowels. I'll mend that if you don't mind. --Janneman 00:01, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
