It was my fault for misreading the 1541 Manual's excerpt. Now that I think about it, I remember that those "free blocks" lists were accounting for both of the dual-drive disks as a whole (which seemed rather stupid at the time, and now even more so). Yes, they are 0.5M per side.

Although it would have been nice if this talk page had been invoked earlier.  :)
