[edit] Summary
This illustrates how spatial structure may be required in a model. If the small circles represent bee colonies and the larger circles the territory of each, then it is clear that these colonies can influence each other. In this example, there is a lot of overlap, and hence competition, between neighboring colonies. There is a small amount of overlap between colonies two away from each other, and no overlap between colonies three away from each other. Colonies three apart can effect each other, however, through their influences on the colonies next to them and two away.
