"Complicated" is Avril Lavigne's first single, released in 2002 from her debut album, Let Go. The single reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Lavigne's first top-ten single. The single also reached number three in the United Kingdom and number one in Spain, Australia and Mexico. Based on its chart performance, the song is also Lavigne's second most successful single, and was also one of the most successful releases of 2002. The song was ranked at number 197 in Blender magazine's "The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born". [1] The song is also considered to be her signature song. The song also has a parody by "Weird Al" Yankovic called "A Complicated Song". Avril recorded this song in one take during recording sessions.[citation needed]

[edit] Song information

The song was written by Avril Lavigne and The Matrix (Scott Spock, Lauren Christy, and Graham Edwards), and produced by The Matrix. In this pop-rock anthem, Lavigne finds herself in a complicated situation with a boy in her life. She enjoys his company when it's just the two of them together, but around his friends he puts on an act and pretends to be someone he's not. She also feels that he is trying too hard to fit in by wearing preppy clothes. Although she likes him, this behavior causes her to exclaim, "Why'd you have to go and make things so complicated? I see the way you're acting like you're somebody else, gets me frustrated..."

The video, directed by The Malloys, starts off with Avril asking her bandmates if they want to "crash" the mall. They respond with enthusiasm, and skateboard there. Some shots show Avril on guitar playing with her band in a skate park, which is ironic because the song does not feature a guitar at all, whilst others show her with the band at the mall playing around with clothes and jewelry, throwing things, and harassing employees. Avril's brother and sister appear as extras in the video.

[edit] Awards

To date, the Canadian single of "Complicated" has shipped over 100,000 copies in Canada. The song has been awarded the gold and platinum single certification by the CRIA for shipments of at least 50,000 and 100,000 singles shipped respectively. "Complicated" also won the Single of the Year at the 2003 Juno Awards. Lavigne also got recognized for "Complicated" in the U.S., when the song got nominated at the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Song of the Year. She lost both awards to Norah Jones' "Don't Know Why". The "Complicated" single has generated 5.9 millions points worldwide on the WWC.
