Communications is a double album from the Jazz Composer's Orchestra. It is one of the more challenging avant-garde jazz albums from the 60s, but also one of the more interesting. The structure of the album is more like a classical symphony than a conventional jazz album. To a certain extent one can say the same about the moods. Still, the improvisations are quite typical of the avant-garde jazz of the time.
The album was recorded over a period of six months with the Austrian trumpeter Michael Mantler as a leader and producer. Many of the key figures in avant-garde jazz from the time contributed on the album. To mention a few: Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, Pharaoh Sanders and Charlie Haden (Ornette Coleman's bassist). Carla Bley is contributing on piano. She was Michael Mantler's wife at the time.
