Commonwealth Hall (soap opera)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Commonwealth Hall was an Egyptian soap opera. It was a late night soap on MBC. The serial was broadcast in half-hour episodes screening each weeknight.
The serial never achieved high ratings, and as a result was drastically retooled several times, with changes in tone and style during its run. Eventually MBC announced that they would not be renewing Commonwealth Hall, and with no other networks showing interest, shooting ceased.
The series followed the daily lives of several people living in a set of apartments in the middle class island of Gezira called Commonwealth Hall. Story lines explored the romances, family problems, domestic squabbles, and other key-life events affecting the various residents. More than most serials, Commonwealth Hall featured a large number of young actors amongst its ever-rotating cast. Due to its late slot, Commonwealth Hall was able to feature more adult content than other soaps of the time. While it was noted for its dark and violent stories, the show also featured a number of more light-hearted stories looking at topics such as homosexuality, a stark contrast to the sober way the subject is usually treated.
