CommVault competes directly with other companies in this field, including Symantec/Veritas Software and their Backup Exec and NetBackup products, EMC's Legato product, Computer Associates Arcserve, Hewlett-Packard OpenView Storage Data Protector, Syncsort Backup Express, and others.

Created in 1988 as a development group in AT&T's Bell Labs, the group produced AT&T's in-house backup software, Automatic Backup, Archive and Recovery Software. AT&T CommVault was spun off with Lucent in 1996 and later that year went private with a management buyout. Their current headquarters are located in Oceanport, New Jersey. The company went public in September 2006.
