ComixTalk (formerly Comixpedia) was founded on February 3, 2003 .[1] The site publishes news and opinion on the medium of comics with a focus on digital publication such as webcomics. It features an online magazine published on a monthly basis as well as a daily blog and discussion forum. Interviews with key creators such as James Kochalka[1] and Matt Madden[2] have also been a feature.

ComixTalk was founded under the name Comixpedia, which it held until 2007. The name change was made to differentiate the site from Comixpedia.org, a webcomic-based wiki site that was hosted by ComixTalk until mid-2007 (Comixpedia.org is now operated by Josh Roberts of ComicSpace).

The website runs on the Drupal content management system and has since 2006. Previously, from 2003-2006, it ran on the Postnuke CMS.

[edit] Magazine

The initial editorial staff of ComixTalk included Frank "Damonk" Cormier, Leia Fitzgerald, Bill Duncan and Xaviar Xerexes. Others who have served as editors include Kelly J. Cooper, Wednesday White, Matt Shepherd, and Al Schroeder.

There have been 3 Editor-in-Chiefs of ComixTalk since its founding:

  • February 2003 - October 2004: Frank "Damonk" Cormier
  • October 2004 - 2005: Xaviar Xerexes
  • 2005 - December 2005: Kelly J. Cooper
  • January 2006 - Present: Xaviar Xerexes

When ComixTalk launched, then-EIC Frank Cormier stated that the purpose behind the website was to fulfill the perceived need for "a centralized hub from which to exchange information and contacts, to learn more about the events and exploits inside our blossoming community, to foster and promote a healthy awareness and image of webcomics to those outside."[1]

The magazine includes reviews, interviews, regular columns and longer feature articles.

[edit] Daily News

In addition to a magazine, ComixTalk also features daily news and commentary on its front page. These news posts are a combination of editor-written material, reader-contributed material and an aggregate of news from multiple sources related to webcomics.

In 2006, a number of webcomic creators and writers were invited to write the daily news for a week. They included:

[edit] Encyclopedia

A webcomic-focused encyclopedia was created at comixpedia.org in September 2005. At its start, it included many of the webcomic articles at Wikipedia (and therefore can be considered a fork of Wikipedia). It was a part of ComixTalk from its launch until mid-2007 when it was transferred to Josh Roberts of Comicspace.

Although no longer part of ComixTalk, it continues to grow with over 3,576 articles as of May 2008.
