Comic book swimsuit specials are issues of comic books devoted wholly or in most part to depicting individuals in swimwear, often posed in provocative or sexually suggestive ways.
The first American comic book publication to produce a swimsuit edition was Amazing Heroes in 1990, which took its inspiration from the annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition which was first published in 1964.
Unlike the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, comic book equivalents tend to feature illustrations of swimwear-clad fictional characters (the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition and most other similar publications feature photos of real people).
The trend became most popular in the mid-1990s (with major publishers such as Marvel Comics producing swimwear editions for a period) and it still continues in diminished form today.
