[edit] Re: Charles B. DeBellevue and citations

Thanks for your comment. I noticed the Charles B. DeBellevue on the list of new articles. I nominated it for DYK, but first put citations in order. A good place to look for information about citations is WP:CITE. There are a number of templates that can be used, which simplify citations. The <ref> formatting for citations seems to be one of the most common, especially for featured articles, though there are other approaches.

The Military history project offers some guielines, in particular on content, style, citations, etc. -- Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history#Content and style.

Take a look. Feel free to drop back by to my talk page and ask further questions. — ERcheck (talk) 01:24, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Question about some references:
  • Jeffrey Ethell and Alfred Price (1989). Footnote #4 - is this for page 141 or pages 55-61 or both? In the {{cite book}} template, pages is a field. — ERcheck (talk) 02:01, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

I did some more work on the Notes section after your last edit. I keep forgetting to fill out the edit summary before I save but I will get better at it. RE: Question "Jeffrey Ethell and Alfred Price (1989). Footnote #4 - is this for page 141 or pages 55-61 or both?" I am pretty sure it is both. I changed it that way until I can go back to the library and verify page number 141. I could not tell from my notes. Thanks again. Colgator 05:00, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Would you please provide a citation for the quote in the 2nd paragraph of the "September 9, 1972, MiG Kills 5 & 6" section? Thanks. — ERcheck (talk) 11:31, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
Citation added per above. Colgator 14:50, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] DYK

Updated DYK query On 31 May 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Charles B. DeBellevue, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Thank you for your contributions! Sean William @ 19:29, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] More on Charles B. DeBellevue

You're welcome on the DYK nomination. It is an interesting, well-written, well-researched and referenced article.

As far as the edit you asked about, I think I understand the question/edit summary. I've quoted the paragraph below. The paragraph starts out in the third person, describing the scenario. Where I've marked it in italics, it changes to an apparent first person narrative (bold mine). If part is intended to be a quote, then "quotes" should be put around that part. It would be helpful if you would review and either make it all third person, or make the relevant first person wording quoted.

hey got a visual on the MiG about 5 miles out on final approach with his gear and flaps down. Getting a lock on him, they fired missiles but they missed. They were coming in from the side-rear and slipped up next to that MiG no more than 500 feet apart. He got a visual on us', snatched up his flaps and hit afterburner, accelerating out. It became obvious we weren't going to get another shot at the MiG.

As far as a spell checker - no, there isn't one for the edit window. Sorry. — ERcheck (talk) 23:53, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

I'll take a look and make a reassessment. (It will have to be tomorrow.)
As for "borrowing" from other Wikipedia articles — that's fine. It's even better that you verified information and have reliable sources. As far as interviewing DeBellevue, please be aware that personal interviews are not generally acceptable as sources. If there is an interview published in a reliable source, then it can be used.
BTW, if you take look at the military infobox page, you will find that in the infobox, the "awards" entry is generally for "notable" awards, not a comprehensive list. A full list of awards and decorations are generally included in the body of the article. The general practice that is used, at least on the Marine Corps bios, is to include the medals in order of precedence down to the Purple Heart. One exception I've seen is for the POW medal when having been a POW is a significant part of the person's notability.
