[edit] Removing acronyms
"(no need to remove acronyms... template did not seem to bother anyone for over a year, so a change like that might be better discussed first)" Okay, I would like to remove the acronyms from the template. There's space in the template and the schools should be referred to by their proper names as per WP:Naming conventions.--Loodog 02:22, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
- Fair enough, though pretty much every collegiate navbox template I could find uses abbreviations and common names of institutions. For example:
- Template:Colleges and universities in metropolitan Boston
- Template:Ivy League
- Template:Association of American Universities
- Template:ECAC Hockey League
- Template:Public colleges and universities in Connecticut
- Template:Big East Conference
- Template:Commonwealth Coast Conference (along with almost all college athletic conference templates)
- Template:Public colleges and universities in Indiana
...amgonst plenty others. I think the concerns raised by WP:Naming conventions (which is a preference, not a prohibition) are addressed by the fact that each of the link in the template are under the title of "Colleges and Universites in Rhode Island". The chance for confusion (which the WP abbreviation policy is trying to limit) is remarkably slim. I see no reason why this template should differ from the majority of the other university templates. Just my $.02. And kudos for reverting before even waiting for a response on the discussion page. - Masonpatriot 04:13, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
- I haven't reverted it since you raised objection to my change.--Loodog 05:00, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
- Metro Boston only has acronyms on the following:
- MIT — known more as MIT than as Massachusetts Institute of Technology)
- School of the MFA — has a very long full name
- UMass Boston —
-
- The Ivy, ECAC, Connecticut, Big East, Commonwealth templates don't abbreviate, though does remove "university" and "college".
-
- Association of American Universities and Indiana mostly only acronizes specific state school campuses.
-
- I will agree to keep the template as is excepting that I'd like URI to be written out University of Rhode Island since its acronym is not used colloquially so much more than its full name.--Loodog 20:51, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
- Sounds like a good compromise. Sorry, I think I just made a mistake on when your edits happened. - Masonpatriot 21:58, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
