The vegetation is predominantly made up of lower plant groups (mosses, liverworts, lichens and fungi) .There are, in total, around 100 species of mosses, 25 species of liverworts, 300 to 400 species of lichens and 20-odd species of macro-fungi, but I am going to focus on one of the two flowering plants that live on this amazing continent the Antarctic pearlwort ( Colobanthus quitensis ) is found along the western Antarctic Peninsula and also on the South Orkney Islands and the Southern Shetland Isles.
