• December 1 - Virginia Tech defeats Boston College in the 2007 ACC Championship Game. The Hokies are named ACC champions and earn an automatic bid to the 2007 Orange Bowl game in Miami, Florida.
• November 3 - Navy beat Notre Dame, after losing 43 consecutive years, and ended college football's longest streak of one team winning over another team.
• October 13 - The top two teams in the nation – the LSU Tigers and the California Golden Bears – lose on the same weekend for the first time since 1996.
• October 6 - The top-ranked USC Trojans fall at home to then 1-4 Stanford in what many are calling one of the greatest upsets of all time.
• September 30 - In a single weekend, five teams ranked in the top ten and seven teams ranked in the top 13 were defeated.
• September 1 - The Appalachian State University Mountaineers defeated the Michigan Wolverines in the 2007 Appalachian State vs. Michigan football game. This upset is the only time a lower division team has ever defeated a ranked Division I-FBS team.
• July 26 - Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said that his conference will consider expanding to twelve teams to accommodate the Big Ten Network. (ESPN)
• July 25 - Senior LSU Tigers tailback Alley Broussard announced that he is leaving the team to concentrate on academics. Broussard started eight games in his career and rushed for 1,537 yards with 18 touchdowns. (ESPN)
• July 12 - The NCAA imposed sanctions on the University of Oklahoma for "failing to monitor" Rhett Bomar and offensive lineman J.D. Quinn. Oklahoma will be on probation until 2010, will lose two scholarships for each of the next two seasons, and will have to vacate the record of its 2005 season. Oklahoma plans to appeal the ruling. • July 12 - Former Texas Longhorns quarterback Major Applewhite left Rice University to join Nick Saban's staff and the Alabama Crimson Tide. (ESPN)
• July 3 - Old Dominion University hired Bruce Stewart as associate athletic director to develop the Monarch's football program. The ODU Monarchs will begin playing Division I-FCS football in 2009. (Raleigh News&Observer)
• June 27 - ESPN announced that the season debut of College GameDay will air from Blacksburg, VA on September 1. The Virginia Tech Hokies will take on theEast Carolina Pirates. (hokiesports.com)
• June 27 - A new NCAA rule banning the use of text messaging in recruiting is set to take effect on August 1. The NCAA board of directors will meet on August 9 to reconsider the rule. (ESPN)
• January 8 - Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets wide receiver Calvin Johnson announced that he will forego his senior year and enter the NFL Draft.
• January 6 - The Alabama Crimson Tide hire Nick Saban away from the Miami Dolphins as their new head football coach, replacing Mike Shula.
• January 1 - Boise State uses 3 trick plays to upset the 2006 Oklahoma Sooners football team in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl

• December 9 - Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith wins the 2006 Heisman Trophy. Darren McFadden of Arkansas is the runner-up.
• December 2 - The 2006-07 Bowl Picture starts to firm-up as the regular season draws to a close.
• November 17 - Bo Schembechler the former coach of the Michigan Wolverines football program, died at the age of 77. His death came the day before one of the biggest games in the history of the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry as the two teams were each undefeated and respectively ranked #1 and #2 in the country.
• October 15 - After a game between the Miami Hurricanes and Florida International University is interrupted by a bench-clearing brawl, Miami Coach Larry Coker announces the suspension of eight players.
• September 16 - Controversial officiating leads coach Bob Stoops of the 2006 Oklahoma Sooners football team to ask that the result of his team's game versus the Oregon Ducks be over-turned. As a result of mistakes made, the Pacific-10 Conference has suspended the entire officiating crew who worked the game.
• September 6 - The 2006 NCAA Division I-A football season is underway as Notre Dame defeats Georgia Tech 14-10, #9 Cal is blown out by Tennessee, and Bobby Bowden's Florida State University Seminoles upset Miami. In the rankings released Tuesday, Ohio State, Texas, and USC occupy the top three spots in both polls.
• September 2 - "Godzillatron" debuts as the largest high-definition video screen in the world of college football.
• August 24 - Kansas Jayhawks defensive tackle Eric Butler alleges in a federal civil rights lawsuit that the NCAA violates Title IX by granting pregnancy leave to female student athletes, while he was denied an extra year of eligibility following the birth of his daughter.
• June 2006 - Former Heisman trophy winning running back Ricky Williams, having been suspended for the 2006 NFL season for violating the League's substance abuse policy for a fourth time, agrees to a contract with the Toronto Argonauts, although he announces that he plans to return to the Dolphins in 2007. • June 29 - Tragedy struck the Northwestern Wildcats football team when coach Randy Walker died, of an apparent heart attack. He was just 52 years old. The Northwestern community was stunned by the loss. Pat Fitzgerald was named the new head coach on July 7, 2006.
• August 23 - The Oklahoma Sooners ban their student athletes from working for Big Red Sports and Imports, a car dealership that had allegedly violated NCAA extra benefits rules by paying two players, Rhett Bomar and J.D. Quinn, for work that they did not perform. (rm October 15, 2006)
