Columbia High School is a high school in Nampa, Idaho. The school opened in 2006 and was designed with two floors and a separate building for the advanced classes. It is part of Nampa School District 131, which shuttles students from one high school to the other to meet their class requirements. Each school has a different focus; Columbia's is technology, performing arts, and broadcasting.
[edit] Performing Arts
Although Columbia is a fairly new school, the Performing Arts Department jumped into activities with both feet. All choirs in 2006 got a Superior in the District Three Competition. The Drama Department put on the plays "A Girl In The Mirror", "Arsenic and Old Lace", and "Snoopy".
[edit] Location
Columbia is located in Nampa, Idaho. In 2006, the school was completed on time, and was the third major high school to be built in the district. Its location was due to an increasing number of students in the given area.
[edit] Controversy Over the Name
Before the school was built, the District had on a name: High School. The name Aurora came from the natural phenomenon Aurora Borealis. But, the students of the middle schools feeding into the future high school protested with approximately one letter to the District per student.[citation needed] The main argument against the proposed name was in reference to the Sleeping Beauty movie in which princess' name is Aurora. The students feared jokes that opponents at sports events might say. With such an overwhelming outcry, the District decided to find a different name. Thus, the name Columbia was decided on. Students have accepted this name and it is expected to be permanent.
