[edit] History

The school was founded in 1947 as a ministry of the Central Church of Christ. In the 1950s, the school moved to its current location on 91st and Glisan St. Since moving to its current location, Columbia, has maintained close relationships with neighboring Eastside Church of Christ and Cascade College, both of which allow Columbia to use their facilities for various functions.

[edit] Athletics

Columbia Christian has had a very successful history in sports for many years. Sports offered currently by the high school are Soccer(coed), ladies' Volleyball, men and women's basketball, and track (coed). In the past golf, cheerleading, and cross country have been offered. Junior High and Elementary (5th and 6th) have sports programs featuring basketball, soccer, volleyball, and track (junior high only).

Basketball is by far the most popular sport at Columbia Christian. In previous years, nearly half of the high school student body have been involved in basketball. The men's basketball team has been in place throughout much of the school's history. The girls basketball team was formed in the mid-1990s, while the first few years of the team were not successful, including the much publicized loss to Catlin Gabel of 2-102. This defeat was gained national publicity in Sports Illustrated. However, as the girl's basketball team entered the new millennium, success followed.

Both teams have competed in state championship tournaments, the boys team competing in the Championship game three years in a row (2003, 2004, 2005), however, received second place all three years. In 2007, the boys team placed 3rd in the state tournament.

[edit] Rivalries

In Basketball and Volleyball, Columbia Christian's Rivals are Damascus Christian School and North Clackamas Christian School. These rivalries exist mainly because the schools involved often have state caliber boys basketball teams. For the last five years, these three teams have appeared in the Oregon 1A State Championships.

Boys Basketball
2004 - NCCS took 1st in state and CCS took 2nd.
2005 - CCS took 2nd in state to Imbler and NCCS took 4th.
2006 - Damascus took 1st in state, CCS and NCCS did not qualify.
2007 - Damascus took 2nd in state, CCS took 3rd.
2008 - CCS took 4th in state, NCCS did not place. Damascus did not qualify.

[edit] Arts

Columbia Christian has programs in the arts which include theatre, art classes, and chorus. The school once had an award-winning band, but the band was disbanded after the director departed in the 1990s. There is a fall play and a spring musical every year. The Choir competes against mostly 2 and 3A and has lately claimed the "Unofficial Non-Sanctioned wholly and completely self-proclaimed 1A Choir Championship" Trophy due to the lack of other 1A Schools competing.

[edit] Future

For much of the 2000s, Columbia has been striving to open a second campus in Vancouver, Washington. While property has been purchased off Padden Parkway, there have not been sufficient funds to build a new school. The proposal of a new Vancouver campus has been debated by some who believe that the school would be giving up to much by moving in terms of history, location, and attendance. Some believe that the funds for a new school should be instead used to improve the facilities at the current location.
