[edit] Notes of Interest
Despite its relative small size, Columbia was once the county seat of Henry County (before the county was divided to form Houston county.)
Brothers John Anglin and Clarence Anglin, who were made famous for escaping from Alcatraz Island, robbed the Columbia bank of $19,000 in January, 1959[1].
[edit] Notable residents
- Monte Irvin, born in Columbia, member of the Baseball Hall of Fame[3]
The Honorable James Green is Mayor and a notable land speculator.
Curt Smith, owner of 3/4 of the land surrounding the town's lone traffic light.
Columbia will celebrate it's 10th River City Fest and Annual Gospel Sing in 2008. The first year 1998, the RCF & AGS was not supposed to have got off the ground. But Herietta Brown editor of the Gospel News magazine and Singing News Gospel Magazine denoted Columbia first to have the most gospel groups in a 14 hour span of time. The Record may be topped by others but we had 28 group appearances that day; The ease of it was having two stages one on one end of town, the other stage on the other end. Scott Gamble President has group times and proof of that 1998 event, all you have to do is contact him at Classicalgamble@excite.com
