The 1st Congressional district of Colorado is located in central Colorado, encompassing the city of Denver and nearby areas. It is represented in the 110th Congress by Democrat Diana DeGette.

Following the 1990 U.S. census and associated realignment of Colorado congressional districts, the 1st Congressional district consisted of all of Denver County and parts of Adams, Arapahoe, and Jefferson counties.

Following the 2000 U.S. census and associated realignment of Colorado congressional districts, the 1st Congressional district consists of parts of Arapahoe County including parts or all of the cities of Englewood, Cherry Hills Village, Sheridan, Aurora and Glendale and all of Denver county.

[edit] Competitiveness

As with most urban districts, Colorado's 1st District has proven to be friendly territory for Democrats. Based almost wholly in the city of Denver, the 1st has not elected a Republican since Patricia Schroeder (D) defeated incumbent Mike McKevitt (R) in 1972. African-Americans make up 8 percent of the district while Latinos account for 23 percent. George W. Bush received 31% of the vote in this district in 2004.
