Colonia Dublán

Colonia Dublán is one of the two surviving Mormon colonies in Mexico (the other being Colonia Juárez) located in the state of Chihuahua. It is currently a very small town located just north of Nuevo Casas Grandes. It was founded by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the late 19th century as part of a large colonizing effort, instigated by Brigham Young, which dotted the map of western United States and northern Mexico. These groups were sent to Mexico to establish the Church in Mexico and spread their beliefs throughout the country. Most of the remaining colonizers engage in agriculture and produce crops such as peaches, apples, pecans and chile. There is also significant production of wheat and cattle. There are efforts to develop a bed and breakfast sector. The Mormon community now includes a number of Latino Mexican converts. The remaining descendants of the colonizers are faithful Latter Day Saints and continue to serve an integral role in the LDS Church in Mexico and all over the world. Michigan Governor George Romney, father of Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was born here and many relatives remain in the area.
