[edit] Playing career
[edit] Club
Sheehan played his club hurling with his local Éire Óg side and enjoyed some success. He first tasted success in 1960 when the club won the Mid Cork junior hurling title and went on to retain it for the next two years. In 1962 Sheehan won a junior county championship after defeating Carrigtwohill at the Athletic grounds by 3-4 to 2-4. The club went into the intermediate grade after that and Sheehan added a county intermediate league title to his collection in 1963.
[edit] Inter-county
Sheehan first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Cork intermediate hurling team in 1964. That year he captured a Munster title in that grade, however, Cork were later defeated by Wexford in the All-Ireland 'Home final.' Sheehan's performances on this team brought him to the attention of the Cork senior selectors and he joined the team in 1965. Cork, however, were heavily defeated by Tipperary in that year's Munster final. In 1966 Sheehan captured a senior Munster title after Cork disposed of Limerick in the provincial final. An extremely young an inexperienced Cork team later lined out against Kilkenny in the championship decider. Sheehan proved to be one of the heroes of the game as his two goals gave Cork a 3-10 to 1-11 victory over their old enemy. It was Sheehan's first and only All-Ireland title. He left the inter-county set-up shortly after this victory.
