The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) is primarily a two-year college in Clark County, Nevada, with one four-year degree in Dental Hygiene. The school is the largest public higher education institution in Nevada and the third largest of its kind in the nation.
Founded in 1971 as Clark County Community College, the school became Community College of Southern Nevada in 1991. On March 16, 2007, the Board of Regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education voted to change the name of the school to College of Southern Nevada effective July 1, 2007.[1] [2] [3]
College of Southern Nevada has three main campuses in the Las Vegas metropolitan area: the Charleston Campus, Cheyenne Campus and Henderson Campus. It is part of the Nevada System of Higher Education.
Students CSN provides degrees in hospitality management and training in such fields as the culinary arts, dealing, and travel and tourism. CSN has trained more than a million students for the work force.[citation needed] It routinely graduates the largest number of nurses every year.[citation needed]
The college also has the most diverse student body, serving half the state's minority population along with more than 700 international students from more than 60 countries. In fall 2007, 44.8 percent of students were caucasian, 20.8 percent Hispanic, 10.8 percent Asian and 10.1 percent African American. Nationally the college enrolls students from 48 states in more than 3,000 classes each semester.[citation needed]
The majority of students, 74.1 percent or 28,880, attend part time and 25.9 percent or 10,110 students attend full time.[citation needed]
The college is a member of the Scenic West Athletic Conference and a Division I member of the National Junior College Athletic Association. CSN also boasts the National Junior College 2003 World Series Champion men's baseball team. [4]

The current president of CSN is Dr. Michael Richards. Dr. Richards was appointed leader of the college by the Nevada Board of Regents in May 2008 after serving as interim president since August 2007.[6]
Richards is responsible for an institutional budget of $126 million, supervision of six vice presidents, two legal counselors, three directors or professional staff, relationships with foundation trustees and governing board members. Prior to his appointment, Richards served as vice president for academic affairs at CSN since July 2005. He came to CSN from Southern Utah University, Cedar City, where he served as associate provost and associate professor of business for six years.[citation needed]
Richards became involved in higher education in 1976 as a faculty member of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and has worked in higher education institutions in Utah and Nevada since.[citation needed]
[edit] CSN Police Department
The Department consists of the Public Safety (Non Sworn) members and its Police Force (Sworn State of Nevada Category 1 Police Officers)
In 2004 The College moved forward with its plan to start a police department by hiring a Chief and Deputy Chief of Police. In 2006, CSN's first three police sergeants were recruited.
CSN police officers are peace officers with full police powers. CSN Police are responsible for the safety and well being of all CSN students, faculty, staff and visitors, as well as enforcing the laws and regulations of the state of Nevada, the many municipalities that the college campuses are located in, as well as the rules and regulations of the Nevada System of Higher Education.
