[edit] Introduction

The Mahidol University College of Music (Bangkok, Thailand) is the first music conservatory in Thailand offering various degree programs, including Pre-College, Undergraduate, Masters and Doctoral programs in many areas of music. The Master of Arts in Cultural Study with an emphasis in music was offered in 1989. Three years later, the program was expanded and renamed the Master of Arts in Music, concentrating in Music Education and Musicology areas. In the same year, a special program, Music Campus for the General Public, was set up at the Seri Center, Srinakarin Road, Bangkok, with the purpose to prepare prospective students for entrance to the College, as well as to offer the best in music education to the general public. The Undergraduate program, initiated in 1998, offers studies in Music Performance, Jazz Studies, Thai and Oriental Music, and Music Technology. In 2001, the College offered the Pre-College program to provide high school students with proper knowledge in music suitable for further studies in the college level. The Doctoral degree in Music, the first of its kind in Thailand, was offered in 2005 with an emphasis in the philosophy of Thai and Eastern music. Another campus for the Music Campus for the General Public program is established at the Siam Paragon, Rama 1 Road, Bangkok, in 2006.

The College of Music, Mahidol University has more than 80 full-time faculty, many of which are recognized nationally and internationally for their accomplishments as performers, composers and scholars in the profession, as well as for their commitment to teaching. The College of Music has hosted numerous concerts, recitals, workshops and seminars every semester.

The primary goal of the College of Music is to provide a professional training environment for all music disciplines, and to prepare music students for careers in performing, teaching, research, music technology, music business and music composition.

The College building complex at the Salaya campus is a modern facility comprising of rehearsal rooms for large ensembles, small ensembles and Thai traditional music ensembles, many mid-size and private practice room, private teachng studio, piano class room, recording studios for orchestra and small ensembles, MIDI lab, lecture and conference, music library, and a newly constructed 353-seat, state-of-the-art music auditorium with modern equipment.
